A South African man died on Tuesday after apparently drinking an entire bottle of Jagermeister in less than two minutes as part of a bet, according to local police. Sadly, this challenge proved fatal and cost him his life.
- The unnamed man was competing against other customers at a local liquor store. The incident happened at a shop in the village of Mashamba and the prize was to win roughly $12, South African news outlet Sowetan Live reports.
- The man simply couldn’t handle the amount of alcohol he was drinking. Waterval police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement to reporters: “One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to the local clinic, where he was certified dead.”
- Footage of the man drinking the Jagermeister was uploaded to Twitter. The video, which has tens of thousands of views as of Thursday morning, shows the man downing the bottle while a crowd of other patrons egg him on to finish it.
- An investigation has been launched into the man’s death. While it’s unclear if any charges will be fired against the owners of the liquor store, police are continuing to investigate the events surrounding the man’s death.
