A man has taken to Reddit to reveal his future bride’s unusual request. User throwratonypan claimed that before he marries his girlfriend, she’s requesting that he follows one of her “family traditions” by wining and dining her mother and spending the night alone with her at a hotel. Needless to say, he wasn’t too comfortable with that, and it’s caused all kinds of drama.
- At first, he thought it was a joke. OP revealed that when his girlfriend first mentioned this “tradition,” he assumed she was joking and laughed it off. “She said that the boy must take the mother of the bride out on a date night, buy her a dress and something to sleep in, pay for everything and buy them a hotel to stay in. She said that it’s nothing to be worried or freaked out about and that getting the hotel doesn’t mean you have to sleep together (although a long time ago it did). I laughed a little bit and asked if she was serious,” he recalled.
- He changed the subject pretty quickly. Not wanting to talk about it anymore, OP ended the conversation and nearly forgot about it… until this week. With their wedding coming up in a month, his fiancee wanted to know if he’d planned the date with her mother just yet. That’s when things went south.
- OP told her straight up that he wasn’t into the idea. “I didn’t want to spend a night alone in a hotel with someone who wasn’t my girlfriend or wife. I asked her why we would have to get a hotel. She explained that a long time ago the mother of the bride would actually sleep with the boy and that it was viewed as a way to kick off the marriage,” he wrote. “I asked if she expected me to do that. She laughed and said of course not, but that she couldn’t be upset with me if it did happen.” Yikes!
- He tried to compromise with his future wife. While there’s no way he wanted to spend the night in a hotel room with his future mother-in-law, he did offer to take her out to dinner. However, that wasn’t enough for his girlfriend, who “got more upset and asked me why I was refusing to follow a fun tradition.” Even though he expressed his discomfort, she basically told him that he was being stubborn and needed to grow up.
- The bride’s mother was actually supportive. While many members of her family thought OP was being a jerk, her mother actually said that while she “would love to have a night together” (!!), she totally respects his right to say no. That has done nothing to assuage his girlfriend, however.
- His fiancee wants to keep the tradition alive. Even more concerning is that his future bride is apparently so into the tradition, she’d do the same with any kids they had in the future. “I questioned her if she plans on sleeping with our son-in-law if we have one in the future. She said that she doesn’t plan on it, but she can’t promise what will happen. It mainly depends on the guy and what he wants to do. She said that she would tell him that I don’t feel comfortable with it,” he shared.
- Many people think he’s trolling. While strange things do happen, the man claims his girlfriend has a Roma background, which many pointed out is a culture that does not include “traditions” like this. I guess we’ll never know!
