Man Says People ‘Can’t Live Anymore’ After Showing $100 Grocery ‘Haul’

An American man on TikTok has lamented that it’s basically impossible for the average citizen to “live anymore” after showing off the grocery “haul” he was able to purchase with $100. While pretty much everyone has felt the hit of rising inflation rates, seeing it in black and white like this was pretty shocking.

Why is everything so expensive?!

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), all food prices were predicted to rise 5.8% in 2023, a number that was later revised to about 6.3%, per Bon Appetit.

The memes about it being impossible to find, let alone afford, eggs were rife this year, and people have been lamenting the rising costs of everything from bananas to dry pasta.

While there’s good reason for these rises — drought across the country, the war in Ukraine, etc. — all consumers know is that they’re seriously struggling to put food on their tables in many cases, especially since groceries are far from the only thing that’s gone up in price.

TikToker @carenstino was floored to see the price at the tills during a recent shopping trip.

Carenstino showed his followers just how much a crisp Benjamin was able to get at the local grocery store, and spoiler alert: it wasn’t much.

“I’m literally shaking from shock… something needs to change,” he captioned the clip.

His shop was for “very basic” items, which makes the high prices even more unbelievable.

“This is getting out of hand. It’s to a point where people can’t live,” he said.

He didn’t even get a week’s worth of groceries for that money.

Showing exactly what he bought, Carenstino said, “You’re telling me this is $100? This isn’t even barely anything to feed me for a couple of days.”

He then shows of a small pack of chicken, some rice, a dozen eggs, English muffins, body wash, deodorant, some juice, and stationery.

“$100 for this? Excuse me?” he said, disgusted.

Plenty of people in the comments know exactly where he’s coming from.

As one person commented, “I used to make family dinner 6 years ago for $40. The exact same dinner cost $90 now.”

Another added, “We’ve literally hit the point where it’s now cheaper to eat out.”

Others suggested he might try shopping at stores like Aldi and Trader Joe’s to save a little extra cash, but Carenstino didn’t mention where he’d gone (or if any less expensive options were available in his immediate area).
