The “Bat Out of Hell” singer, real name Marvin Lee Aday, passed away on Thursday evening, January 20, his family confirmed in a post on his official Facebook page on Friday morning. He was surrounded by his family as he took his last breaths, and the world now mourns the loss of one of the most memorable and creative artists of his generation.

  1. The cause of death has not been confirmed. It’s currently unknown how Meat Loaf died, whether it was sudden or whether he had been battling an illness of some kind. However, BBC News reports that he had many injuries and illnesses throughout his career, most notably fainting while performing in Pittsburgh in 2011, collapsing on stage during a show in Canada in 2016, and breaking his collar bone during an interview in Texas in 2019.
  2. Meat Loaf was surrounded by his family in his final moments. “Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side,” the Facebook announcement read. “Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours.”
  3. The family has thanked fans and friends for their support through this difficult time. “We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man,” they added. “We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time. From his heart to your souls…don’t ever stop rocking!”

Throughout his career, he sold more than 100 million records and has even appeared in major blockbuster movies including Fight Club, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Wayne’s World. His Bat Out of Hell trilogy alone sold millions of records and his hit 1993 single “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” is still one of the most iconic tracks ever released.
