‘Mom’ Facing Eviction With Her 3 Kids Raises $200K, Then Reveals She’s Actually Just The Babysitter CNN

A Las Vegas “mom” of three who claimed to be facing eviction with her three children over $2,000 back rent raised more than $200,000 in less than 24 hours to help her out of her bind. Dasha Kelly, 32, took part in a CNN story about the federal eviction moratorium that ended over the weekend. Following the segment on Monday, August 9, she started a GoFundMe seeking $1,900 to cover the back rent. The donations poured in and exceeded her wildest dreams. There’s just one problem: she’s not actually the kids’ mom, she’s the babysitter.

  1. Kelly painted quite the sob story. In the CNN segment, Kelly claimed that she’d lost her job as a card dealer in a casino because of the pandemic and had fallen behind on rent because of it and was going to be put on the street with her three kids, who appeared alongside her. That night, more than 2,7000 strangers raised more than $170,000 to help her out, only for the truth to be revealed soon after.
  2. The kids are actually Kelly’s boyfriend’s. After heading back to CNN to thank everyone for the money they raised, Kelly admitted that she wasn’t the kids’ biological mom and instead was just babysitting them for her boyfriend.
  3. Apparently the kids do spend a lot of time with Kelly. CNN clarified that Kelly spends a “significant” amount of time looking after the girls, but the girls’ biological mom soon cropped up and set the story straight. Shadia Halo was “understandably upset” by Kelly’s ruse, while Kelly is still claiming to be a “mother figure” for the young children.
  4. More than $212,000 has been raised. While Kelly has clarified on the GoFundMe that she’s not the kids’ biological mom, a rep for the fundraising company told CNN that no money has been passed on to Kelly and won’t be until they can verify her identity and story.
