These Mountain Bluebirds Are Some Of The Most Beautiful Creatures In The Sky

Nature is full of some incredible creatures. There are so many different species across the earth that it’s hard not to be in awe of the way evolution works and the way biodiversity continues to thrive. Take, for instance, the mountain bluebird. This seemingly unassuming bird is incredibly beautiful and a great reminder of the wonders of Mother Earth.

  1. Their feathers are so bright! The mountain bluebird is only small. They weigh about 1 oz. on average and tend to range from 6.3″–7.9″ in length. The male birds are more vividly colored than the females, with bright turquoise feathers that are only slightly duller on the underbelly. Meanwhile, the females have a more muted (but still equally beautiful) blue color to them with a brownish color on the underside.
  2. Believe it or not, they’re native to North America. While such vibrant creatures tend to be from more exotic locales, the mountain bluebird is native to North America and can be seen year-round. In fact, it’s so popular that it’s the state bird of not one but two states, Idaho and Nevada.
  3. The mountain bluebird subsists on insects and fruit. They tend to eat spiders, grasshoppers, flies, and whatever other insects they can get their beaks on as well as small fruit like berries. They’ve also been known to eat peanuts or mealworms when offered on a feeder platform.
  4. They live six to 10 years in the wild. All being well, mountain bluebirds have a decent life span, flying, feeding, and mating throughout Canada, the US, and Mexico over their 6-10 years on Earth. While the population of these birds has slightly dwindled in recent years, they’re still considered a healthy species and aren’t in any immediate danger, which is good news!
  5. If you see one, be sure to take a picture. If ever there was a bird befitting lots of Instagram photos, it’s definitely the mountain bluebird. Just look at them!
