You know the version of that morning. Four hours of sleep, maybe five, and the day starts anyway.
So you compensate. Coffee, a shower, the right clothes. You answer the emails and say the normal things in the normal order at the 10 a.m. meeting.
As far as you can tell, you’re pulling it off.
Two studies say you probably aren’t. And the part that gives you away has nothing to do with your face.
Something in how you come across to other people shifts overnight, and they pick it up without knowing what they’ve picked up.
One sleepless night made the amygdala react about 60 percent more strongly to negative images
The first experiment came out of Harvard Medical School and UC Berkeley, run by Seung-Schik Yoo alongside Matthew Walker, who has built a career studying what sleep does to the brain.
They took 26 healthy adults between 18 and 30 and split them into two groups. One group was kept awake for roughly 35 hours under supervision. The other went home and slept normally.
Then everyone got into an fMRI scanner and looked at a run of pictures that started out emotionally flat and got progressively more disturbing.
Both groups reacted. That part is expected. The amygdala is the region that flags things as threatening or upsetting, and it does that in everyone.
But in the sleep-deprived group, the amygdala response was about 60 percent larger, and the amount of amygdala tissue that activated was roughly three times greater.
Same pictures. Same instructions. One variable different.
The part of the brain that normally applies the brakes had stopped talking to it
The size of the reaction wasn’t the most interesting finding. The wiring was.
In the rested group, the amygdala was strongly connected to the medial prefrontal cortex, the region that provides top-down control and puts an emotional signal into context before it becomes a response.
In the sleep-deprived group, that connection was significantly weaker. Instead, the amygdala was more tightly coupled to brainstem regions that drive autonomic arousal, the heart-rate-and-alertness machinery.
So the emotional signal gets louder at exactly the moment the supervision drops away, and it heads toward the body rather than toward judgment.
In the news release accompanying the study, Walker said that without sleep, “the brain reverts back to a more primitive pattern of activity.”

After one night without sleep, people held strangers at a greater physical distance
Eleven years later, Walker ran a different kind of experiment with Eti Ben Simon at Berkeley’s Center for Human Sleep Science.
Eighteen healthy adults came through the lab twice, at least a week apart, in randomized order. One visit followed a normal night’s sleep. One followed 24 hours awake.
Each time, they did a social distance task. An experimenter stood three meters away and walked slowly toward them, and the participant said stop at the distance they’d normally keep from a stranger.
After the sleepless night, people stopped them noticeably sooner: about 13 percent farther out in the in-person version, and about 18 percent in a computerized version done in the scanner.
The researchers note that this increase is roughly a third the size of what gets reported in conditions defined partly by social withdrawal, like autism and schizophrenia. And the effect held after accounting for changes in mood and anxiety, which also shifted with sleep loss but didn’t explain the distancing.
More than a thousand observers, told nothing about the experiment, singled out the sleep-deprived people
Everything so far describes what sleep loss does inside a person. This is where everyone else enters the picture.
After each lab session, participants sat down and answered open-ended questions on camera for about a minute each. Nothing dramatic. Opinions on things like whether everyone should go to university.
Those clips went to 1,033 people online who knew nothing about the study. Each watched four videos, two from rested sessions and two from sleep-deprived ones, never the same person twice, and rated what they saw.
They rated the sleep-deprived versions as significantly lonelier and less desirable to interact with. Asked which of the four they’d pick as a collaborator, they chose the rested people more often than chance and named the sleep-deprived people as their last choice.
The observers were never asked how tired anyone looked. The researchers deliberately avoided the word so nobody would guess the premise, and asked about energy levels instead.
Which left the judges with no fatigue explanation available to them. They watched a person talk for sixty seconds and came away with an impression of that person’s life.
The loneliness didn’t stay on the screen
The observers also reported feeling lonelier themselves after watching a sleep-deprived clip than after watching a rested one from the same person.
And the two moved together. The lonelier a viewer rated someone, the lonelier that viewer subsequently felt.
That’s one minute of video from a stranger they will never meet.
Ben Simon described the loop in the university’s announcement of the findings: “Without sufficient sleep we become a social turn-off, and loneliness soon kicks in.”

Both studies are small, and the effect showed up without an all-nighter anyway
It’s worth noting: 26 people in the brain imaging study, 18 in the loneliness study, all young adults in a lab. These are not population-scale findings.
The amygdala study also compared two separate groups of people rather than the same people twice, which leaves more room for the groups to have differed from the start. And a full night of enforced wakefulness bears little resemblance to the ordinary tiredness most people are running on.
The broader research on sleep loss and emotional reactivity points consistently in this direction, but the size of the effect varies quite a bit from study to study, and one-minute video clips are a long way from being someone’s coworker for a month.
The part that closes some of that gap is the third arm of the loneliness study, which never went near a lab.
A separate group of 138 people simply logged their own sleep for two nights and answered questions about how they felt the following days. Nobody was told to sleep more or less. The ones whose sleep quality dropped from one night to the next reported feeling lonelier the next day. The ones whose sleep quality improved reported the opposite.
Ordinary variation. The kind almost everyone has. For context, 30.5 percent of American adults averaged under seven hours a night in 2024, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
The night before is doing more social work than your face is
Telling you to get more sleep would be useless advice. You already knew it, and it isn’t always inside your control anyway.
The part worth remembering is that the version of you who shows up after a bad night behaves more like an output than a mood. Effort doesn’t override it. The reactivity is measurable, the withdrawal is measurable, and the impression it leaves on other people is measurable in the ratings of a thousand strangers who were given no context at all.
Which puts it in the same family as a lot of behavior that gets misread as character. Some of what looks like coldness or disinterest is closer to the nervous system operating with fewer resources than usual.
Practically, that argues for moving things when you can. The hard conversation, the pitch, the first date, the meeting where you need people to warm to you. If you had four hours of sleep, you are not bringing your face to that room. You’re bringing an amygdala with no brakes and a body that’s holding people at a slight distance without asking your permission.
And it argues for a bit of grace running the other way. When someone seems withdrawn, flat, hard to reach, you may be reading their sleep rather than reading them.
The people in that study didn’t know they were coming across differently. They gave the same kind of answers to the same kind of questions, twice, a week apart, and a thousand people watching told them apart anyway.
