This Parent’s Job Listing For Nanny For 18-Year-Old Daughter Has To Be A Joke, Right?

I don’t have kids, but I imagine if I did, a big priority for me would be to ensure that I’m preparing my children to be independent, capable, successful adults who can look after themselves and actually thrive on their own. That’s why this job listing for a part-time nanny for an 18-year-old girl was so mind-blowing to me. It can’t be serious, right?

  1. The job listing appeared on Indeed. While the listing has now expired (potentially because the position has been filled?), the Canadian parent posted looking for someone to cook and clean for their 18-year-old daughter who is studying Law at the University of Leeds in England. Yes, an 18-year-old adult needs someone to look after her.
  2. Apparently the teen’s schedule is “demanding.” Anyone who’s ever been a full-time college student probably feels that their schedule was demanding. After all, university is a whole different ball game to high school and it’s a major adjustment. However, this spoiled brat is clearly special.
  3. She already has a driver, so the nanny doesn’t need to do that. As the listing reads, “She has a driver who can pick up the groceries and drive her around but someone to ensure she eats well and lives without the stress of laundry, cleaning as her study schedule is very intense. This applicant does not need to be a gourmet chef, simply someone who can ensure my daughter eats three healthy meals a day and the fridge is always full of healthy snacks, juice etc.” Yes, college students tend to eat like crap so it’s good to know your kid is getting some nutrition, but what parent actually hires someone to make sure this is the case?
  4. Since when is laundry stressful? One of the reasons the parent claims their 18-year-old daughter needs a nanny is that they want her to “live without the stress of laundry.” I worry that if someone finds putting some dirty clothes in a washing machine and pressing a button stressful, they’re not cut out for a law degree… or life in general.
  5. The listing made sure to include a humblebrag. The parent weirdly mentioned the daughter’s Canadian heritage, almost by way of reason for why she needs a nanny despite being a fully grown adult. (Any Canadians want to shed some light on this?) Then she goes on to say that the kid lives in a fully furnished apartment in the city center of Leeds, which will be $$$ especially since it’s a two-bedroom with “a full kitchen” and it’s “a lovely apartment.” We get it, you’re rich and have more money than sense.
  6. I pray to God this is fake. If it’s real, it’s everything that’s wrong with parents and kids these days. Teach your kids how to look after themselves and let them struggle a bit so they learn important lessons and become stronger, more worthwhile human beings. Hiring someone else to coddle them because you’re not there to do it anymore is just a hot mess.
