People who can’t work in total silence have it right — a moderately noisy room beats a quiet one for creative thinking

Some people need absolute silence to work. Door closed, notifications off, nobody talking.

Then there are people who can sit in a café with cups clattering, music playing, and conversations happening two tables over and somehow come up with their best ideas.

That can look like distraction. But research suggests moderate background noise can sometimes help creative thinking, precisely because it keeps the mind from locking too tightly onto one obvious answer.

If you’ve ever noticed that certain ideas come easier when the room isn’t perfectly still, there’s a reason for that.

There’s a sweet spot, and it’s about as loud as a café

Ravi Mehta, a professor of business administration at the University of Illinois, wanted to know how different noise levels affect the way people think.

His team tested three conditions across five experiments: a still room at about 50 decibels, a busy café at about 70, and heavy traffic at about 85.

The people working at 70 decibels performed better on creative tasks than the people in the still room. The people at 85 did worse than both.

Mehta’s explanation comes down to friction. Moderate noise makes information slightly harder to process, which sounds like it should be a problem. But for creative work, it isn’t.

When the brain has to push a little harder to think, it tends to pull back from the first obvious answer and consider things more broadly. That small amount of interference loosens the grip, which is often where creative ideas come from.

What’s interesting is how narrow the range is. Seventy decibels is a room where you can hear people talking but can’t make out what they’re saying. It’s enough to be present without being intrusive.

Go a little louder, and the sound stops helping and starts overwhelming. Go a little softer and the brain settles into its most familiar, most well-worn patterns, which are great for executing a plan but not always great for generating one.

That inverted U — too little noise and you’re locked in, too much and you’re shut down, just enough and something opens up — is what Mehta called the Goldilocks principle of creative cognition.

Creative thinking and focused thinking need different rooms

This is where the silence people are also right.

Concentration — reading carefully, editing, calculating, holding a string of details in working memory — requires tight, focused attention. Background noise interferes with exactly that kind of work.

Research on how noise affects cognitive performance has found that ongoing background sound can elevate stress hormones that impair the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for planning, reasoning, and holding onto short-term information.

So the same background hum that helps you brainstorm a new approach to a project can actively hurt you when you’re checking the numbers inside it.

The distinction that matters: if the task has one right answer, you probably want it quiet. If you’re trying to find an answer you haven’t thought of yet, a little background sound may help you get there.

The busy room may be useful for coming up with the headline. The silent room is better for checking every fact underneath it.

The problem was never the noise, it was the interruption

Here’s something that reframes the whole question. A café and an open-plan office can run at roughly the same volume. But one of them feels productive, and the other feels impossible, and the difference isn’t the decibels.

In a café, nobody knows your name. Nobody is going to walk over, tap you on the shoulder, and ask your opinion on a deadline. The noise is ambient. It washes over you without making any demands on your attention. You can tune into it or let it pass, and either way it never requires a response.

In an open office, the same volume includes someone calling your name, a colleague starting a sentence that expects an answer, a conversation near your desk that pulls you in because you recognize the project being discussed.

That’s not ambient noise. That’s directed attention, and every instance of it yanks you out of whatever you were building in your head.

The person who works better in a café didn’t find a louder room. They found one where the sound stays in the background, and nobody expects a response. What we’ve been trying to eliminate isn’t sound. It’s interruption.

The sweet spot is personal, and loud is never the answer

Personality matters here. People who are more sensitive to stimulation will hit the ceiling faster, and what feels like a productive hum for one person can be overwhelming for another. Introverts tend to be more affected by background noise than extroverts, which tracks with how those groups process external input in general.

The kind of sound matters too. Ambient noise without recognizable words is different from a conversation you can follow.

Music with lyrics can compete with verbal tasks in ways that instrumental music doesn’t. And high noise, the kind where you have to raise your voice to be heard, is consistently a burden rather than a boost, regardless of personality or task.

Nobody needs to abandon their closed office because one study liked 70 decibels. The point is narrower than that: if you’ve noticed that you do certain kinds of thinking better with a little sound in the background, you’re not imagining it.

For the part of the job that requires wandering and connecting, a little noise may be doing something useful: keeping the mind loose enough to find an answer it wouldn’t have reached in perfect silence. The research just caught up to what you already knew.
