‘Peppermint Swirl’ Hydrangeas Will Make Your Garden Fresh And Fancy

Hydrangeas are one of my favorite sights every summer. Seeing their blooms means that warm, hot days are finally here and life is good. They’re beautiful plants with massive flower heads and they’re one of my favorites. Whether blue, pink, white, or purple, there are plenty of varieties and they’re all amazing. But have you ever seen Peppermint Swirl hydrangeas? They really are something to behold.

  1. Peppermint Swirl hydrangeas are incredibly unique. They have huge flower heads that grow to be up to 10 inches across, for one thing. The florets are bright white with either blue or pink stripes. Which color you get depends on the pH of the soil it’s planted in. Pretty cool, huh?
  2. They’re slow-growing but prolific growers. Peppermint Swirl hydrangeas flower from early summer all the way until the first frost of fall. They’ll bloom on both old and new growth, though they are pretty slow-growing and compact, according to Gardenia.net. They’ll eventually grow up to three feet tall, which means they’re great if you don’t have a ton of space in your garden.
  3. If you want to grow your own, there are a few conditions you’ll need to meet. A part-shade lover, Peppermint Swirl hydrangeas do best in well-drained soil that’s rich and has a medium level of moisture. They can grow in the ground or in containers if you don’t have tons of room.
  4. You can control which color they bloom. What’s extra cool about Peppermint Swirl hydrangeas is that just by making a few adjustments to your soil, you can choose which color they bloom. For instance, adding aluminum sulfate will make the flowers bluer while adding lime will make them pinker. Just make sure whatever treatments you add are done pre-bloom, preferably late in the fall or early spring at the latest.
  5. Make sure you cut back dead flowers! Once they’re gone, they have to be pruned in order to keep the rest of the plant healthy. Easy enough, right?
