Pixar has made some of the most legendary and beautiful animated films ever, and part of what makes them so great is that they tell the stories of so many different people from so many different walks of life. However, one thing Pixar hasn’t done is include a transgender character in its storytelling. That’s all reportedly about to change as the studio is said to be finally featuring a transgender youth for an upcoming film project.

- A casting announcement flyer was leaked on social media. The flyer announces that Pixar is casting a “youth voice-over role” for an upcoming animated feature, with the main character being Jess, a 14-year-old transgender girl who’s “compassionate, funny, and always has your back.”
- They’re looking for actresses between 12 and 17 years old. As per the announcement, Pixar wants to audition actresses for the role who “are enthusiastic, outgoing, funny, and energetic” and most importantly who can “authentically portray a 14-year-old girl.” They’re asking the legal guardians of any actresses who feel they would be a good fit for the role to email [email protected].
- This role should really go to a transgender actress. While Pixar hasn’t said it won’t, they’ve also kept the audition process pretty open. However, if you want a role to be played authentically, there’s no better way to do that than by filling it with someone who’s lived that experience, which in this case would be an actual young transgender actress. Fingers crossed this project goes in that direction.
- Can’t wait to hear more about this project! While there are no other details currently available about this role or the movie itself, Pixar is known for creating some incredibly thoughtful and compassionate stories and I have high hopes that this will be the same. Representation is so important, and allowing young people to see themselves reflected on screen is such a wonderful, valuable experience.
