A British police officer was left with teeth marks on his arm after a suspect bit him for enforcing England’s lockdown rules. 29-year-old Christopher was arrested in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on Thursday, April 9, but biting a 21-year-old constable wasn’t his only crime: Hill punched the officer and his partner too.
He will be remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Sat 11 April 2020.
Whilst responding to an incident yesterday (09/04/20) on Drake Street in Rochdale, two officers were punched. One of those officers – a 21-year-old PC –
was then seriously bitten.— Greater Manchester Police #StayHomeSaveLives (@gmpolice) April 10, 2020
- The constable was “seriously bitten.” According to a statement from the Greater Manchester Police, the unnamed constable was “seriously bitten.” This, as well as the punches Hill unleashed during the incident, led to the man being arrested and charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and one count of criminal damage.
- Police have been focusing on getting people to stay home. All of Britain is under orders to stay home. While people are allowed to leave their house for vital work, trips to the grocery store, and one hour of exercise per day, many have been flouting these rules. Between March 25 and April 7, Greater Manchester Police broke up a ridiculous 494 house parties, 166 street parties, 122 group gatherings for sporting events, 173 gatherings in parks, and 112 incidents of anti-social behavior (loitering basically) and public disorder. Hill was one of these people who simply refused to play by the rules.
- Christopher Hill became violent when confronted. When the female officer responded to reports of a disturbance in Rochdale, she turned up on the scene with another officer and tried to explain to Hill why he wasn’t allowed to visit other people’s houses. Instead of simply absorbing the info and moving on, he began to lash out, punching both officers and biting one. What’s wrong with people?
- It’s important that everyone stays home to stop the spread of infection. As GMP Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said in a statement, “We understand the desire people will have to spend time with family and friends over the Easter period; however it is vital that we follow the Government guidelines. We must do this to protect ourselves, our families, our communities and the NHS by preventing the spread of this highly contagious infection. … We are trying to engage, explain, and encourage everyone to follow the Government guidance. However, where people do not comply with the guidelines, we will use the legislative powers. We hope that such actions will not be necessary and the public will work with us during this challenging time.”
- Hill has been remanded in custody and is due in court on April 11. Christopher Hill may end up spending a fair bit of time behind bars for his assault and if that’s what it takes to make him abide by the rules, so be it. The constable who suffered the bite was taken to hospital and is healthy.
Words fail me when it comes to some people's behaviour. This is shocking at the best of times, but during a Coronavirus Pandemic this is just the lowest of the low. I trust the CPS & Court will now do what we all expect of them! https://t.co/1lpSonOgol
