Priest Uses Water Pistol To Baptize Baby While Social Distancing

Given the current state of the world, following social distancing measures is incredibly important to protect ourselves and those who are more vulnerable in our society. However, it makes doing everyday things like going to the hairdresser or even getting our kids baptized very difficult if not impossible. One priest seems to have gotten creative, however, and a photo appeared online which seemed to show the holy man performing a baptism with a water pistol.

  1. The details about where and when this photo taken are unknown. Like lots of stuff that goes viral online, the origins of the photo are unknown. It originally went viral on Twitter, though it’s unclear who the parents/baby are, who the priest is, where this took place, or if it’s even real. Given that another Catholic priest recently performed a blessing on his congregation using a water pistol, a baptism isn’t too hard to imagine.
  2. The photo is, however, really hilarious. While it’s kinda insane to consider we’re at a period in our lives that performing a baptism with a water pistol is a necessary thing, we might as well embrace it. The baby in its christening outfit being held out in the air as the priest aims the gun at the poor thing is so ludicrous that you can’t help but laugh. And we can all use a few laughs right about now.
  3. This isn’t the first time a water pistol baptism has taken place. Minnesota couple Mary and Kyle Nielsen wanted their little one baptized back in March and while they did do the actual ceremony since this was prior to strict lockdown, they did a little photo app for fun with the priest pointing the water gun at the baby. After the picture was uploaded to Facebook, it went viral pretty quickly.
  4. If water pistols are what we need for baptisms and blessing for now, so be it. It will be nice to get back to some semblance of “normal” once it’s safe to do so, but for now, if we have to get creative to get things done, that’s just how it has to be. At least the pictures will make us smile!
