Prince Philip, Husband Of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, Has Died Aged 99

Prince Philip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 99. Buckingham Palace confirmed the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh just after midday GMT on Friday, April 9, saying in a statement: “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” He was not only the longest-serving consort in British history, but as Prime Minister Boris Johnson pointed out, Philip “inspired the lives of countless young people.”

  1. The Duke of Edinburgh had been experiencing ill health lately. While he returned to the Palace on March 16 after a month in the hospital, during which time he underwent a heart operation, Prince Philip had experienced multiple bouts of poor health in recent years. While his passing is certainly sad, for many, it wasn’t entirely unexpected.
  2. Many people around the world are mourning Prince Philip’s loss. Fans of the royal family in the United Kingdom and around the world joined together to express their condolences and the sense of loss they felt after Prince Philip died on Friday. The sentiments were well-received by the Palace, who added in their statement: “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
  3. The flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast. Following the announcement of Prince Philip’s death, the flag was lowered to half-mast as mourners gathered outside. At Windsor castles, many people began leaving flowers as a tribute to the late duke. According to BBC’s royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell, his passing is “a moment of real national sadness” and “a moment of sadness, most particularly of course, for the Queen losing her husband of 73 years – a bigger span of years than most of us can imagine.”
  4. It’s unlikely that a public service will be held. While public services are always held to allow the public a chance to mourn together after the death of such a huge figure in the monarchy, because of COVID-19 restrictions in the UK and the possibility of spreading the illness, that will not be happening. However, no doubt the royal family will find a way to commemorate the life of such an important and special man.
