For as long as I can remember, I’ve hated the sound of other people chewing. Doesn’t matter if it’s something loud like popcorn or chips, or something soft like a pear or a bowl of soup.
The sound gets in and stays there, taking up every inch of my attention until I either leave the room or lose my mind.
My mom always told me it was one of my quirks. Something I could switch off if I tried hard enough.
Turns out she was wrong. There’s a name for this kind of reaction. It’s called misophonia, and it affects far more people than she’d probably want to admit.
Chewing shouldn’t be able to ruin someone’s evening, but for some people it can
Misophonia isn’t just finding certain sounds annoying. Most people don’t love the sound of someone crunching ice at the next table. The difference is what happens next.
For people with misophonia, certain sounds trigger an immediate, intense response: anger, disgust, panic, or a desperate need to get away. It doesn’t scale with volume. A person eating chips across the room can set it off, but so can someone quietly swallowing soup two seats over.
Chewing is the most common trigger, but breathing, sniffing, tapping, pen clicking, and other repetitive sounds made by another person can do it too.
Jane Gregory, a clinical psychologist at the University of Oxford, led a survey that found around 18% of people had symptoms significant enough to cause real problems in their daily lives. That’s roughly one in five.
It doesn’t have its own diagnosis in the DSM yet, but researchers now have a consensus definition, and the condition is recognized in clinical research. The question was never whether it was real. Nobody had looked closely enough.

You’re sitting at dinner, someone next to you starts chewing, and within seconds it’s the only sound in the room. The conversation disappears. The music disappears.
All that’s left is their jaw, and a feeling in your chest that’s somewhere between anger and the need to physically leave. You’re gripping your fork a little tighter, scanning for an excuse to step outside, and everyone else at the table is eating like nothing is happening.
That’s what “just ignore it” misses. The sound isn’t being processed the way it is in other people’s brains. It’s being flagged as something that needs a response, and you can’t override that any more than you could decide not to flinch at a loud noise.

Researchers have started explaining why
Sukhbinder Kumar, a neuroscientist at Newcastle University, put people with misophonia into an fMRI scanner, played them their trigger sounds, and compared what happened to people who didn’t have the condition.
The trigger sounds, things like chewing and breathing, produced a much stronger response in a brain region called the anterior insular cortex. That’s part of the salience network, the system that decides what’s important enough to deserve your attention right now.
Their bodies reacted too. Heart rate went up. Their palms started sweating. The person knew, on every rational level, that someone eating a sandwich wasn’t dangerous. But their brain and body were responding like the sound needed to be dealt with immediately.

If the sound itself were the problem, your own chewing should bother you too. For most people with misophonia, it doesn’t.
That’s because it was never just about the acoustic signal. Context shapes the whole reaction. The same noise that’s unbearable coming from a coworker in an open office or a partner across the breakfast table can be completely neutral when you’re the one making it.
The brain isn’t responding to volume or pitch. It’s responding to a sound made by someone else, a repetitive, bodily sound, and assigning it an urgency that doesn’t match what’s happening.
Which means the people closest to you are often the worst triggers. A partner eating cereal in the morning. A parent chewing gum in the car. Your roommate eating an apple at 11 p.m. while you’re trying to read.
The closeness doesn’t protect you from the response. If anything, it makes it worse, because you’d feel bad telling someone you love that the sound of their mouth is making you want to rip your hair out.
So people with misophonia learn to manage around it. They eat with headphones on. They time their meals so they’re not at the table at the same time. They pick the seat farthest from the person most likely to trigger them and hope nobody notices. The relationships stay intact, but there’s a constant low-level negotiation happening underneath that most people at the table never see.
It can be passed down
If you have it, you’ve probably wondered where it came from. Whether you could have turned out differently, or whether this was always going to be the way your brain handled certain sounds.
The research points toward wiring, not willpower. A study using data from 23andMe found genetic overlap between misophonia and conditions like anxiety and PTSD, which points to shared biological roots underneath.
Misophonia clusters in families. It’s not as simple as inheriting eye color, but genetics seem to play a role in how likely someone is to develop this kind of response.

Not every sound that bothers you is misophonia
Plenty of people find certain noises disgusting or annoying. Nails on a chalkboard. A fork scraping a plate. That’s preference, and it’s universal.
The difference is intensity and automaticity.
Misophonia isn’t choosing to be annoyed. It’s a response that fires before you can decide anything about it, and it starts changing how you live. Avoiding meals. Wearing headphones through every shared space. Snapping at people you love over sounds you know shouldn’t matter that much.
The science is still developing, but the picture gets clearer every year.
Knowing there’s a name for it doesn’t make someone else’s chewing less unbearable, and it doesn’t give me, or anyone else, the right to ban pears from the house.
But it changes the story from someone being difficult to a brain doing something it’s wired to do, and no amount of willpower is going to switch it off.
