The waiter sets your plate down. “Enjoy your meal.”
“You too!”
He’s not eating. He’s holding three other plates and somebody’s ranch. You’ve just wished a working man a lovely dinner that does not exist, and he’s already gone, and you’re left holding your fork and replaying it in the hall of awkward memories that’s been with you ever since you were little.
Everybody knows this moment. Everybody hates this moment.
But this article isn’t actually about the waiter.
It’s about the machine that produced that sentence. Because the same system that just embarrassed you is running most of your day, brilliantly, for free, and the slip you’re cringing about is one of the only receipts it ever leaves.
About two-thirds of what you do every day starts without a conscious decision
Start with the actual scale of this, because most people drastically underestimate it.
A study on daily habits tracked people’s real-time behavior across a week and found that roughly two-thirds of what they did each day was initiated automatically. No decision, no deliberation. The behavior just started.
You did not decide to make coffee this morning. You did not choose your route to work. You did not select which hand grabs the toothbrush, which shoe goes on first, or what you say when a coworker passes you in the hallway.
Hey, how’s it going. Good, you? Neither of you stopped walking. Neither of you decided anything.
Back in the 1970s, cognitive scientists Roger Schank and Robert Abelson gave these stored sequences a name: scripts. Mental templates, built from every previous version of a situation, that run the familiar parts of life so you don’t have to.
The restaurant has one. The grocery store has one. The elevator has one.
And you can feel a script the moment it breaks. Someone answers how are you with something real, not great, my dog died this morning, and the whole interaction stutters. Your brain had already loaded the next line, and it wasn’t written for grief.
That stutter is the sound of the automatic system handing an unfamiliar problem up to management.
Autopilot exists because conscious attention is expensive, and your brain refuses to waste it on solved problems
Here’s the part that should change how you feel about all of this: the delegation is the design.
Conscious, deliberate thought is powerful and slow and costly. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman famously split the mind into two systems: a fast, automatic one that handles the familiar instantly, and a slow, effortful one that does the careful work. The slow system is a scarce resource. You get a limited ration of it per day.
So your brain runs an economy. Anything it has solved before, it automates, and habit researcher Wendy Wood’s decades of work show that much of daily behavior runs on exactly these automatic routines shaped by context, cued by the places and situations where they were learned, precisely so your conscious attention stays free.
Free for what? For everything that actually needs it.
The hard conversation. The unfamiliar decision. The kid’s question that deserves a real answer. The problem at work that has no script yet.
Every “how’s it going” your fast system handles is a small tax refund paid back to the part of your mind that does your real thinking. A brain that deliberated over every greeting, every commute, every toothbrush grip would arrive at its important moments already spent.
Yours doesn’t. That’s not laziness. That’s portfolio management.

“You too” is what happens when the fast system answers a nod with a nod
Now put the waiter moment under this lens, because the slip turns out to be the system working almost perfectly.
The anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski named this kind of language a century ago: phatic communion, speech whose job is social connection, not information. How are you. Take care. Have a good one. Verbal nods. The words technically mean something, but the meaning isn’t the point. The contact is the point.
Your fast system knows this cold. It has processed enjoy your meal hundreds of times, and in nearly every previous version of that exchange, the correct response is something warm and reciprocal.
So it grabbed the warmest thing on the shelf and sent it before the slow system finished reading the room.
Notice what it reached for. Not something cold. Not something strange. The reciprocal wish. I hope things go well for you too.
The content missed. The instinct was generous. And in live conversation, which happens at a speed no careful system could sustain, generous-and-fast beats accurate-and-slow almost every single time. The system is tuned for warmth over precision because warmth is what social moments actually run on.
The cringe you feel afterward? That’s just the slow system filing its report. It caught the mismatch, which is its job. It filed it three seconds too late, which is also its job. Reviewing is what it’s for. Speed was never its department.
Experts perform worse when they think about what they’re doing, so autopilot is what mastery looks like
If autopilot still sounds like a euphemism for sloppiness, here’s the research that should retire that idea permanently.
Cognitive scientist Sian Beilock and Thomas Carr studied expert golfers and found something strange: the experts could barely describe their own individual putts afterward. Novices remembered everything, step by step. Experts remembered almost nothing, because skilled putting had been encoded as a procedure that runs without step-by-step attention.
The skill didn’t live in their awareness anymore. It lived below it. That’s what being good at something physically is.
Then comes the twist that flips the whole hierarchy. In follow-up experiments with elite golfers and veteran soccer players, researchers found that giving experts a distracting second task barely touched their performance. What wrecked them was being told to pay attention to their own mechanics. Novices showed the exact opposite pattern.
Read that again. Conscious attention to execution is the beginner’s tool. Forcing it back onto a mastered skill actively degrades the skill. It’s a large part of what “choking under pressure” literally is: the slow system barging into a job the fast system had handled for years.
Which reframes some moments you’ve been quietly worried about.
Driving home and realizing you don’t remember the drive isn’t your mind failing. It’s the signature of a skill so thoroughly mastered it no longer needs your witness. Same for the shower you don’t remember taking and the “you too” you didn’t decide to say.
You’ve been reading your automaticity as decline. The performance research says it reads as expertise. You have been practicing being a person for decades, and most of it finally runs without supervision.
You’re the only one who noticed, because everyone else’s autopilot absorbed it and moved on
One last piece of mercy, and then you can let the restaurant moment go.
The waiter has heard you too a thousand times. The ticket taker who says enjoy the show hears it from every third customer. Their fast systems processed your warmth, accepted it, and moved on before you’d finished blushing, because their brains don’t spend slow-system review on script mismatches any more than yours spends it on the commute.
Research on the spotlight effect backs the general principle: we consistently overestimate how much anyone is tracking what we do. The audience for your slip was, rounding generously, one person. You.
And none of this means your whole life runs unattended. The scripted moments are the small ones, the greetings and transactions that keep a day moving. The conversations that matter still summon the slow system, and your brain is remarkably good at knowing which is which.
It just refuses to spend deliberation on the waiter. It’s saving that for something that needs it.
So the next time you too escapes at someone who is not eating, not flying, and not having a birthday, skip the ten minutes of fork-in-hand replay.
A system that runs two-thirds of your day, protects your attention for what matters, defaults to warmth at speed, and operates your hardest-won skills below the level of thought made a rounding error in your favor.
Your brain read the room correctly. It answered the feeling instead of the sentence. And honestly, of the two, it picked the more important one.
