The first thing most of us do when we see something worth remembering is pull out a phone. A concert, a sunset, a birthday cake, the absurd thing a toddler just did with a piece of spaghetti.
We take the picture because we want to keep the moment. That’s the whole logic: the camera preserves it so we don’t lose it.
But research on how memory and photography interact has found something that complicates that logic. Under certain conditions, taking a photo of something can make you remember it less clearly than if you had just stood there and looked.
Photographing something can make it harder to remember, not easier
Linda Henkel, a psychologist at Fairfield University, set up a study in the university’s art museum. She led participants on a guided tour and told them to photograph some objects and simply observe others. The next day, she tested their memory for everything they’d seen.
The participants remembered fewer of the objects they’d photographed. They also remembered fewer details about them: the color, the shape, where the object had been in the room.
The objects they’d only looked at, without a camera, were remembered better across the board.
Henkel named this the photo-taking impairment effect.
Her explanation was direct: when people count on the camera to record something, they may not attend to it as fully themselves.
The camera doesn’t erase the memory, it redirects the attention
There was one detail in Henkel’s study that kept the finding from being a simple warning against cameras. When participants were told to zoom in on a specific part of an object, the impairment disappeared.
Their memory for the zoomed-in detail was strong, and so was their memory for the parts they hadn’t zoomed in on.
Zooming in required them to look closely, make a choice, and engage with what they were seeing. The camera was still involved. But so was their attention.
That’s the mechanism underneath the effect.
Memory doesn’t record everything that happens in front of you. It encodes what you’re paying attention to.
If you’re at a concert and your eyes are on the artist singing, your brain is taking in the sound, the crowd, the bass coming through the soles of your shoes.
If you’re unlocking your phone, framing the shot, checking whether it’s blurry, and retaking it twice, your attention is on the act of documenting, not the act of listening.
Alixandra Barasch, a researcher at NYU Stern, and her team found something more specific: people who chose what to photograph during an experience actually remembered more of what they saw.
The camera improved their visual memory. But it came at a cost. They remembered less of what they heard, less of what was said around them, less of the parts of the experience that weren’t visual.
The camera sharpened one channel and dimmed the rest.

Once the camera has it, your brain relaxes its grip
There’s a second explanation researchers have explored, and it’s the same thing that happened to phone numbers. Twenty years ago, you probably had a dozen memorized. Now you might know three, because your phone holds the rest.
Once the information is saved somewhere external, your brain stops working as hard to retain it.
You know this from experience: the moment you write down a grocery list, the items start to fade from your active memory. Your brain gets the signal that it doesn’t need to hold on anymore.
Psychologists call this cognitive offloading, and it may play a role in the photo-taking impairment effect.
Once you know the camera captured the sunset, some part of your brain may feel less pressure to hold onto every detail. The external record exists, so the internal one doesn’t need to be as sharp.
But the explanation isn’t settled. One study found that the impairment persisted even when participants were told their photos would be deleted afterward. That suggests it’s not just about trusting the camera to remember for you.
Something about the act of photographing itself may change how your brain processes what it’s looking at, regardless of whether the photo survives.
One photo is different from documenting the whole event
Taking a picture of the birthday cake and putting the phone away is one thing. Spending ten minutes shooting every angle, checking each image, adjusting the frame, and thinking about where you’ll post it is another.
The difference comes down to whether the camera pulled you into the moment or pulled you out of it.
The birthday photo took three seconds, and your attention went right back to the room. The ten-minute documentation session meant your brain spent those ten minutes on framing, lighting, and retakes instead of on the thing you were there to celebrate.
The problem was never the camera. It’s when the phone stays up so long that the experience you’re recording becomes the experience of recording.
You walked away with forty photos and a vague sense that you were there, but the thing that made you pull the phone out in the first place is harder to find in your memory than you’d expect.
The photos you go back to are rarely the ones you spent the most time taking
Think about the photos on your phone that stop you when you scroll past them. They’re almost never the carefully composed ones.
They’re the blurry one where everyone is laughing. The accidental screenshot of a FaceTime call. The one your friend took of you when you didn’t know they were taking it, and you’re looking at something off-camera with an expression you didn’t know your face made.
Those photos work because something real was happening in the frame, and nobody was trying to capture it. The moment got in by accident, which means whoever was holding the phone was also inside the experience, not standing outside it managing the documentation.
Take the photo if you want one. But the memory you’ll care about in ten years probably isn’t the one the camera gave you.
It’s the one your brain made while you were paying attention to something you couldn’t photograph.
