Red Flags To Look For In A Guy’s Apartment Before You Have Another Date

Sure, you should definitely look for red flags in a guy’s behavior when you’re dating, but you should also pay attention to his living space. Not all of these red flags are applicable to everyone, but most of them are pretty universal. Here are some you should keep your eyes peeled for the next time you’re at your dude’s place.

  1. Weed paraphernalia Of course, this one’s subjective—it may turn you on and get you excited that he smokes pot if you’re a stoner too. For some, though, it’s a huge red flag if a guy has bowls and bongs lying around. If you don’t smoke weed, you probably don’t want to be with someone who does. It also shows that he really doesn’t care at all that you know because he just left it lying around.
  2. Condoms out in the open This is just totally weird. Is he having THAT much sex that he needs to keep their condoms out in the open, or has he had sex super recently and is now on a date with you? Either way, it’s sketchy that the condoms are just chillin’ out on top of his dresser. If he assumes he’ll be getting some from you, he’s sorely mistaken.
  3. A filthy bathroom You can probably hold back judgment if things are only a little bit dirty since we’re all human, but if things are totally filthy, that’s gross—especially when the bathroom is unbearable to be in. It’s not hard to clean up after yourself, so if he can’t manage to wipe down the sink and toilet or clean the shower, there’s a problem.
  4. A dirty comforter and dirty sheets Gross, gross, gross. If there are hardened spots on his sheets or multiple visible stains, you’re going to be repulsed. Who wouldn’t be? Also, if there’s a nasty scent that’s coming from his sheets, you can assume they haven’t been washed in months and that’s disgusting. A dirty comforter and sheets could mean that he’s dirty in general, not taking care of himself and his environment. Plus, who’d want to sleep on that?
  5. Only beer in the fridge What if you’re sleeping over and you want a midnight snack? Guess you’ll be out of luck. It’s a red flag when someone not only has an empty fridge but has plenty of booze in it. This may signal an alcohol problem or it may just signal laziness. It’s fine if he happens to get a lot of takeout, but have a few things in the refrigerator!
  6. Their mattress lying on the floor OK, this one may be nitpicky and a bit judgmental, but what are we, 18? Having his mattress lay right on the floor is just unnecessary. Bed frames cost next to nothing from IKEA and they make all the difference in aesthetic. Just spend the money to get one and be active enough to put it together. Otherwise, he’s just sending the vibe that he’s lazy AF.
  7. Pictures of scantily clad women. Women’s bodies are beautiful but you don’t need to see them half-naked on your date’s walls. This just says to you that he’s a bit of a dirtbag and probably doesn’t respect women. He likely doesn’t even know what feminism is or thinks it’s a man-hating cult. I’m running out the door if I run into something like this at a date’s house and so should you.
  8. Totally bare walls Not everyone is into interior design, but it’s important to have some decorations. If your date has none then you might be wondering about his attention to detail and if he cares about art or aesthetic at all. Of course, if he just moved, that’s an exception. He gets a pass.
  9. Funky smells Maybe something smells a bit off as soon as you enter his apartment. If the funky smell follows you around the place, this is definitely a red flag. What is he doing or not doing that makes his place smell? You’ll probably be freaked out and you definitely won’t be turned on anymore.
  10. No soap anywhere Like, WTF? Who doesn’t have soap in their bathroom or kitchen? This is a big issue and makes it crystal clear that he doesn’t wash his hands in the bathroom ever. It also means he doesn’t care enough to buy soap for guests. No thanks, I’m not interested in a bacteria-filled house or a bacteria-filled dude. It’s not that hard to have soap.
