Ricky Gervais Confirms Netflix Will Release ‘After Life’ Season 2 On April 24 Netflix

While I was initially skeptical about Ricky Gervais’ Netflix dramedy After Life — after all, how funny can a show about a man who wants to kill himself after his wife dies of cancer actually be? — it ended up not only being one of my favorite series of 2019 but in general. Yes, it’s funny, but it’s also incredibly full of heart and really is worth watching (though it did make me cry quite a few times, I have to be honest). Now I can’t wait for Season 2, which Gervais just confirmed will hit Netflix on April 24.

  1. The end of Season 1 ended on a note of hope. While Gervais’ character Tony spent much of Season 1 in an apathetic and grief-stricken stupor, by the end of the season, it seemed he was finally starting to see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel thanks to some unlikely friends, like Lisa, Anne, the Nurse, and his adorable dog. No doubt After Life Season 2 will explore these connections even more.
  2. Gervais has been working on Season 2 for a while. Back in May 2019, Gervais tweeted a photo of himself with a draft of the first episode of the second season of After Life. By September, the cast and crew were back on set filming the new episodes. It’s come together in pretty good time, considering how much goes into making a TV show.
  3. After Life Season 2 could be even better than Season 1. While Gervais hasn’t really given away any information on what the new season has in store for Tony and the others, he did tell Metro that the first season finale does feature “a little clue” about what’s to come and that he’s aiming to make the new episodes even better than those that came before. “The second series is always better. Usually because you know the actors,” Gervais said. “There’s a little clue at the end of series one when he says, I’m just going to use my superpower for good. He can still be an a**hole, and just enjoy it more.”
  4. I seriously can’t wait until April 24. It will really hard not to watch the whole season in one sitting but I’m really going to try to pace myself so I can enjoy Season 2 of After Life even longer. I guess I could just start rewatching the show from scratch if I get desperate while I wait for Season 3 (which HAS to be a thing).
