Rihanna’s Proud Of Her “Fluctuating Body Type” & She Should Be

We tend to think of female celebs as having perfect bodies and that usually makes us feel pretty badly about ourselves. No matter how high our self-esteem is, we’re not immune to wondering if our stomach should be flatter or if we should look a different way. Thankfully for us, we have Rihanna as basically the best inspiration and spokeswoman for body positivity.

Rihanna’s no stranger to criticism about her weight. Just this summer, she hit back at body shamers who called her fat by posting photos on social media showing her buying loads of chips and snacks because if anyone doesn’t GAF, it’s definitely her. As she told The Cut, she has a “fluctuating body type” and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rihanna explains, “One day I can literally fit into something that is bodycon, and then the next day — the next week — I need something oversized; I need a little crop here and a high-waist there to hide that part, you know?” She goes on to say, “What week are you having? You having a skinny week? You having a fat week? Are we doing arms this week? We doing legs this week? We doing oversized?” Since the singer has gotten into the fashion game with her Fenty line for Puma, she’s been talking a lot about body types and clothing. And we couldn’t possibly love it more.

Thinking about clothes in terms of what our bodies look like on a daily basis is a super interesting idea. It’s much more appealing to us than buying a pair of skinny jeans and then gaining five pounds because that’s what happens and then hating ourselves for it. Why wouldn’t we take a page out of Rihanna’s book and believe that some days, we can fit into our favorite pair of jeans and another day, we’re going to go for a baggy sweater and leggings? Sounds like much more fun.

It’s also pretty cool that someone who is in the spotlight 24/7 is talking about not having a super thin body all the time. We love that Rihanna is rebelling against the skinny Hollywood culture and that she knows that it’s completely normal to have your weight go up and down. From a super young age, we’re taught that it’s always better to lose weight than to gain it and that we need to eat as little as possible in order to maintain our weight. But that’s not only boring, it’s also pretty self-destructive. We’re grateful that the singer has been speaking out about this important issue.

When we think about it, we probably all have a fluctuating body type, right? There are some weeks where we eat french fries four nights in a row and don’t have time to go to the gym, and then other weeks, it’s all kale salads and smoothies and regular barre classes. Our lives and bodies are changing all the time and we shouldn’t have to beat ourselves up over it. There’s literally no reason to. After all, now we have the best role model ever in Rihanna and can just think of her whenever we wonder if our hips look a bit bigger today than they did yesterday. We can look in the mirror and go, “So what if they do? It’s totally fine.” Because it is.
