Sandra The Orangutan Is Really Into Washing Her Hands

It’s been drummed into all of our heads for months now and will continue to be for the foreseeable future: you must wash your hands and you must do it well and often. Spend at least 20 seconds scrubbing them with soap and water before rinsing them well and drying them. However, it looks like it’s not just humans that are getting the message. Sandra the orangutan is happy to do her part in practicing good hygiene too!

  1. Sandra is clearly very smart. Sandra lives at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida and has been noticing her handlers regularly washing their hands to prevent the spread of illness. It wasn’t long before she decided to join in with them and wash her own hands!
  2. She’s doing a great job! As you can see in the video, Sandra really takes her time to get her hands nice and sudsy and use her brush to get all the dirt and grime off of them. She studies them from time to time, seemingly looking to see if she’s doing a good job. Short answer? She’s doing a GREAT job!
  3. Sandra even cleans the tree! It’s not just her own hands that Sandra the orangutan wants to protect. After finishing with her own hands, she gets her soapy brush and begins scrubbing down the tree she’s seated next to. Just as humans clean the surfaces around us to ensure we’re getting bacteria and viruses off of them, Sandra has got the right idea here.
  4. Orangutans are so smart! All primates are really intelligent and Sandra is a perfect example of it. Sure, she’s mimicking what humans do without realizing the impact of her actions, but that makes no difference. She seems to grasp the idea of taking her time and washing her hands thoroughly which is really incredible to watch. You go, Sandra!
