Netflix makes some really amazing original series and movies, but according to Rotten Tomatoes, Spenser Confidential isn’t one of them. The new action-comedy movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke only has a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that hasn’t kept it from becoming the most-watched movie of the week on the streaming service since its release on March 6.
- In theory, it should be a winner. In addition to being fronted by Wahlberg, Spenser Confidential also features Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger, and even an appearance by Post Malone. It has all the makings of a good movie but unfortunately, the script just doesn’t deliver.
- So what’s wrong with it? Varying reviews describe Netflix’s Spenser Confidential as “aggressively bad on almost every conceivable front,” “joyless and messy,” and “crap.” Those are not good reviews! Considering that mystery writer Robert B. Parker created the iconic Spenser character and he’s been destroyed in such a way, that kinda sucks…
- Of course, that’s just the critics’ view… The fans seemed to like it a bit better, giving it a fresh rating of 64%, which is much more respectable. After all, it’s meant to be a comedy and not to be taken too seriously, so maybe watching it and taking it at face value allows you to enjoy it much more instead of trying to read hidden messages into it and make it something it’s not. Just a thought!
- The plot actually doesn’t sound all that bad. Spenser (Wahlberg) is an ex-cop who’s “better at making trouble than solving it” and he becomes embroiled in a murder conspiracy involving police corruption. Things get extra messy when two of his former colleagues get murdered, and he takes it upon himself to team up with his girlfriend and an MMA fighter to solve the crime. In other words, Spenser Confidential sounds pretty funny. Give Netflix some credit here!
- It’s available to watch on Netflix now, so you know what to do. Hey, what else do you have going on this weekend?
