A Third Of People Only Wash Their Sheets And Other Bedding Once A Year

I wash my sheets once a week. Every Saturday without fail, I strip the bed and throw my sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers into the washing machine on a hot wash and put fresh sheets on the bed. There’s no better feeling than climbing into a newly made bed at night, knowing it’s nice and clean and smells great. That’s why I’m so shocked to learn that a third of people have admitted that they only wash their bedding once a year. ONCE A YEAR!!!

  1. A survey of 2000 British adults made the horrific discovery. The survey, which was run by Hammonds Furniture, wanted to find out about people’s bedroom habits and boy, I bet they wish they hadn’t bothered. On average, one in three people only strip the bed and wash their sheets and pillowcases one time per year. What is wrong with everyone?!
  2. It’s not just gross, it’s unhygienic. In addition to the fact that sheets gather bacteria that can be stinky and sweaty, not washing your sheets can also lead to dust mites and bed bugs, not to mention skin conditions and irritations and fungal infections. For the love of God, wash your sheets!
  3. We should be washing our bedding at least once a week. Philip Tierno, a microbiologist at NYU, told Business Insider that washing your sheets at least once every week is necessary for good health. He revealed that our sheets can become the “ideal fungal culture medium” that turns into a “botanical park” for nasties like fungus and bacteria, triggering allergic responses.
  4. It’s not just your sheets that need washing. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 36% of those surveyed said they only wash their blankets once a year and 18% say their jeans only go in the wash once a year too. Umm, SERIOUSLY? We’ve got to do better here, people!
