The idea of finding a buried treasure chest full of jewels and gold worth more than you ever could have conceived of in your wildest dreams may sound like fiction, but it’s not so far from reality. The Blackbeard Treasure is launching the world’s biggest treasure hunt soon, hiding 10 chests containing $1 million of cold hard cash each, and you could find one of them!
- The chests are spread out across 10 different states. The treasure chests (and therefore the money) are hidden across the US, with one chest each in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. If you live in or nearby any of those (or are prepared to travel for the potential payoff), it’s time to get started!
- You can’t just randomly start searching. You need to know where to start, after all — a hidden treasure chest isn’t just going to jump out at you. To get searching, you’ll need to purchase a digital map via the Blackbeard Treasure website for $49.99. They’re only available in limited numbers and they’ll also contain clues and riddles to help you get closer to your ultimate goal.
- So what happens if you find one? In addition to the $1 million in cash, each of the hidden treasure chests will contain a location beacon and a camera pointed at the chest. Once you find one, you’ll have to remove a key that’s taped to the chest and use it to open it. Then you call a phone number provided to officially claim the prize. Simple enough!
- It’s all about getting people outside, apparently. “With The Blackbeard Treasure hunt, our goal is to get people excited about getting outside, either by themselves or with friends and family, in order to have the adventure of a lifetime,” said Justin Cohen, managing director of The Blackbeard Treasure. “And in the process of having the time of your life, you may just unearth a fortune.”
