I Wear The Pants In My Relationship And I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way

Whether we like to admit it or not, there’s generally always one person in charge in a relationship and who makes most of the decisions. That’s right—don’t believe the “men and women are equals in a relationship” crap. One partner leads and the other one follows—that’s just the way it goes, at least in my experience. I’m always the one who wears the pants in my relationships and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  1. I’M A CONTROL FREAK. I’ve always been this way—I honestly can’t help it! I’ve always wanted to know what’s happening and to be at the head of a situation. I’m basically Monica from Friends. If I’m out of control, it doesn’t sit well with me. In fact, it makes me freak out. The best way to ensure I know this is by leading.
  2. I’M A STRONG, INDEPENDENT WOMAN. That means I’m also pretty strong-willed. It comes with the territory. This is great for me but not so great for my boyfriend. He probably doesn’t need me to be as strong as I am, especially when it comes to the little things. I decide what we have for dinner, what we see at the movies, and what brand of toothpaste we buy, no matter what my boyfriend says.
  3. I HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS. This is always seen as such a bad thing in a relationship but I don’t really understand why. So what if I have high expectations? Everybody should. Besides, those who matter and truly love me will rise up to meet them anyway.
  4. I LIKE BEING RIGHT. Call me stubborn or selfish but I enjoy being right. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I AM always right. In fact, in some cases, I get it very, very wrong. It’s all part of being human. But when I strongly think that I’m right, I’ll fight my corner hard because I believe you should always stand up for what you believe in.
  5. I LIKE DOING THINGS MY WAY. It’s not that I don’t like doing things my boyfriend’s way, it’s just that his way sucks. I’m kidding, but I do like my way better and, man, does he know about it. I’ve lived with myself for 26 years and only known him for two of those, so why wouldn’t I want to prioritize my way of doing things? Sorry, champ. Try harder!
  6. HE’S MORE LAID-BACK THAN ME. That’s right—our personalities are way different. On the whole, my boyfriend is quite laid-back compared to me. Because I’m more serious (and, okay, a little uptight), it makes me the more sensible one out of the two. And the more sensible one tends to deal with the more complicated decisions.
  7. I’M WISE BEYOND MY YEARS. He’d probably try to argue with me on this one, but I feel like I’m the most mature out of the two of us… regardless of the fact that he’s four years older than me. (Age is just a number, baby!) No, but seriously—I’ve had a lot of life experience. This automatically means that I’m better qualified to deal with the serious stuff and he has to fall in line with the main adult, right?
  8. I DON’T PUT UP WITH CRAP. I’ve had my fair share of bad dating experiences and I’ve reached an age where I won’t stand for it anymore. Sure, everybody makes mistakes and I accept that. But, if you keep making ’em, I’ll come down on you harder than a ton of bricks. Boyfriend, be warned!
  9. I CAN BE JUST A LITTLE DEMANDING. I expect the best from my other half after years of being treated poorly in previous romantic relationships. Anyway, some might call it demanding—I call it being smart enough not to repeat my past mistakes.
  10. EVERY WOMAN DESERVES TO BE TREATED LIKE A QUEEN. I have a feeling you’re rolling your eyes at me right now. It’s corny but true—every lady deserves to be looked after and spoiled. If that makes me old-fashioned, then so be it! I prefer to see it as being an old-school romantic. Either way, wearing the pants in your relationship is great—you should try it sometime. (Unless you’re already wearing them, of course. In that case, high five.)
