Woman Dies Of Broken Heart Moments After Husband Of 70 Years Passes Away

A beautiful couple who had been married for 70 years recently passed away within moments of one another. Raymond and Kathleen Atkins from Virginia had only just celebrated their milestone anniversary when Raymond passed away following a long battle with lung cancer. Only a few minutes later, Kathleen died as well of a broken heart.

  1. It sounds like a movie but this actually happened. The couple’s son, Les Atkins, took to Facebook to share his grief and his love for his parents following their deaths. “I feel like I’m in the middle of both a horror movie and a beautiful love story,” he wrote. “My Dad who is 90 died today in his sleep. In less than an hour, my mother was so overcome with grief, died in his arms. 70 years together!”
  2. Raymond and Kathleen lived a wonderful life together. As Les explained in his post, his parents shared many ups and downs over the past seven decades and most of all, their love got them through. “They raised four children, ran a successful business with a high school education, and cared for so many in the community over the years. We would appreciate your thoughts and prayers in the coming days,” he wrote.
  3. This is a true love story. Even Les was awed by his parents’ commitment and dedication to one another and saw their story as inspirational. “This quote from the movie The Notebook sums up their beautiful story: ‘I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough.'”
  4. Raymond had been in the hospital receiving treatment. However, he wanted to make sure he was home to celebrate his anniversary with Kathleen on July 22. That happened, but his condition quickly deteriorated and one of their daughters found that Raymond had passed away in his sleep. Kathleen was “overcome with grief” and climbed into bed with her husband.
  5. They wanted to be together until the very end and beyond. “Within a matter of minutes, my sister called back and said my mom had crawled in the bed with him and was overcome with grief,” Les told WRAL. “They did not want to go alone. They had endured this life together. They had this strong faith, and they just refused to be apart. It’s a fairy tale in every sense of the word.”
