Woman Who Sawed Off Her Own Hand For Insurance Money Gets Prison Time

A Slovenian woman who sawed off her own hand in an attempt to defraud an insurance company has been jailed for two years. Julija Adlesic, from Ljubljana, is said to have conspired with her boyfriend to sever her left hand above the wrist with a circular saw in the hopes of receiving a $1 million payout. Unfortunately for her, her plan went extremely wrong, and now the only thing she’s getting is a two-year jail sentence.

  1. Julija Adlesic was found guilty of insurance fraud. According to Sky News, she was revealed to have taken out up to five insurance policies in a single year, which raised the suspicions of local authorities. Not only that, but her boyfriend was discovered to have been researching information on how artificial hands worked well before Adlesic lost hers.
  2. She stood to receive more than $1 million in insurance payouts. Half of the money would have arrived immediately while the other half would be paid in monthly installments. Julija Adlesic tried to make things extra convincing by having her boyfriend’s father drive her to the hospital, leaving her severed hand at home so that it couldn’t be reattached. She claimed the incident happened when she was sawing branches.
  3. She still insists she’s innocent. Rather than admit that her extremely ill-conceived plan was indeed intentional, she still insists that it was an accident. “No one wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20,” the now-22-year-old reportedly said in court. “Only I know how it happened.”
  4. She eventually had her hand reattached. Somehow, when police found Julija Adlesic’s severed hand, it was possible to reattach it, meaning that she’s no without a limb after all. Looks like this was all one big waste of time.
  5. Julija Adlesic isn’t the only one heading to jail. Her boyfriend also received a three-year prison sentence while his father will go to jail for one year. As Judge Marjeta Dvornik said upon delivering the verdict, “We believe the sentences are fair and appropriate, and will serve their purpose.”
