Happiness is one of those seemingly elusive things in life that all of us are constantly chasing but only a select few ever seem to find. However, that could be less about luck and more about perspective. According to the Mayo Clinic, part of being content in life is about focusing on the positive instead of honing in on all the negatives. As such, the happy ones among us never bother to complain about any of the following.
1. Other People’s Success
Happy people genuinely share in the joy of other people’s accomplishments. They understand that another person’s success doesn’t diminish their own, and they use it as inspiration to pursue their personal goals. They see success as an infinite resource, and they’re confident in their ability to achieve their own.
2. Their Past
Happy people see their past as a source of wisdom, not regret. They appreciate the lessons their past experiences have taught them, and they use this knowledge to shape their future. They recognize that every experience, good or bad, has contributed to who they are today.
3. Not being perfect

Happy people appreciate the beauty of imperfection. They know that mistakes and flaws aren’t signs of weakness, but rather opportunities to learn and grow. They embrace challenges and take them as opportunities to improve and become better versions of themselves.
4. The weather
Happy people understand that they can’t control the weather, and they adapt to it instead of complaining about it. Whether it’s enjoying the warmth and brightness of the sun on a hot day at the beach or appreciating the joys of cozying up with blankets and movies when it’s cold and rainy outside, they learn to make the most of the seasons.
5. Traffic
Happy people use traffic as an opportunity to make the most of their time. Instead of seeing it as a waste of time, they use it to catch up on audiobooks, learn a new language, or simply engage in self-reflection. They turn what could be a frustrating experience into a productive or relaxing one.
6. Getting older
Happy people see aging as a privilege, not a burden. They appreciate the wisdom and experiences that come with age. Instead of fearing the passing of time, they look forward to the opportunities and growth that each new year brings. They know that some people aren’t so lucky to be able to get older so they want to appreciate every day.
7. The state of the world
Happy people maintain a balanced perspective on global issues. They stay informed and aware, sure, but they choose to concentrate on things they can control and improve. They donate to charities for causes they support, help out in their local communities, and maintain a positive outlook on life. They know there’s beauty out there in addition to the pain.
8. Their personal appearance
Happy people understand that true beauty comes from within. They appreciate their unique features and see their bodies as instruments that allow them to experience life rather than objects to be critiqued or objectified. Sure, everyone likes to look good, but they value health, kindness, and personal growth over physical aesthetics.
9. Mondays
Happy people see Mondays as a fresh start and the beginning of a week full of possibilities. They approach the new week with enthusiasm and a positive mindset, seeing it as a new opportunity to make progress toward their goals. They probably even plan their week around their priorities so that they’re sure to make the most out of every day.
10. The success of their favorite sports team
Happy people enjoy sports for the thrill of the game and the community it creates. They understand that the performance of their favorite team is outside of their control and doesn’t directly impact their personal happiness. They support their team with passion, no doubt about it, but they don’t let the ups and downs of the season dictate their mood or overall happiness.
11. Social media comparisons
Happy people don’t let social media dictate their self-worth or happiness. They understand that social media often showcases highlight reels, not everyday reality, and they refuse to compare their lives with the often embellished lives portrayed online. They use social media as a tool to connect and share, not as a benchmark for success or happiness.
12. Material Possessions
Happy people don’t equate happiness with stuff (according to Harvard Business Review, money doesn’t make you happy!). They understand that true happiness comes from within and isn’t tied to material objects. They appreciate having nice things, of course, but it’s not the most important thing to them. They find joy in relationships, experiences, and personal growth rather than seeking satisfaction from physical possessions.
13. Other people’s opinions
Happy people don’t let other people’s opinions control their happiness or self-worth. They respect other people’s perspectives, but they don’t allow them to dictate their life choices. They value their own opinions and beliefs and they strive to live authentic lives aligned with their values.
14. Their Job
Happy people find fulfillment in their work by focusing on the positive aspects and the value they provide. They understand that every job has its challenges, but they choose to focus on the rewards and personal growth they gain from their work. They see their job as a part of their life, not their entire life.
15. Their financial situation
While they strive for financial stability, happy people don’t let how much money they do or don’t have define their happiness. They understand that wealth isn’t a measure of happiness and they focus on being grateful for what they have. They manage their money wisely and strive to live within their means.
16. The future
Happy people don’t worry excessively about the future. They understand the importance of planning and being prepared, but they don’t let anxiety about the unknown rob them of their present joy. They remain focused on the present, making the most of each day while keeping their future goals in mind.
17. Their living situation
Happy people find contentment in their living situation, whatever it may be. They make the best of their circumstances, whether they live in a small apartment or a large house. They understand that home is a feeling of comfort and safety, not just a physical space.
