A 41-year-old janitor was arrested and charged after he, his wife, and their five children were discovered to be living in a children’s museum where he worked. Police were suspicious when one of Wilbert Calhoun’s daughters listed the Northern Nevada Children’s Museum in Carson City as her home address, the Daily Mail reports. When police investigated, they were shocked by what they discovered.
- Calhoun and his family had made themselves pretty comfortable. Deputies discovered sleeping bags, mattresses, clothes, and toys in unused rooms when they arrived at the museum. Calhoun denied the family had been living there, but the evidence proved otherwise.
- He was also storing something much more sinister there. In addition to food, drink, clothes, and bedding, police say they also found an AK-47, handguns, and marijuana paraphernalia in a storage room near an art supplies closet. They later found other weapons and weapon pieces including a taser and three gun suppressors in the room which “could easily be accessed by a wandering child.”
- Calhoun was arrested and charged. He now faces charges of child endangerment/neglect, two counts of possessing a short barrel rifle, and three counts of possessing a suppressor. It seems he won’t be facing charges for squatting in the museum with his family after being evicted from their apartment.
- Things at the children’s museum had been sketchy for a while. Local Leah Tsuchimoto told News4 that she felt “insecure about the place” because of the generally unsafe conditions and the lack of attention and care paid to the children that visited. Jenny Trotter, a parent who signed her kids up for the summer camp held there, said she’d been looking forward to it but immediately felt uneasy when she arrived with her children. She discovered they’d been left unsupervised and immediately withdrew them.#
- The museum is currently closed until they find a new manager. This decision came after Calhoun and his wife, who was working as the camp manager, were fired.
