If that sounds like you, you’ll want to get a hold of some ‘Chocolate Cosmos’ ASAP because they’re amazing!
- Chocolate Cosmos is also known as Cosmos atrosanguineus. The adorable flowers have gorgeous reddish-brown colored petals with a velvety look and feel that would be incredible in any garden. They can be annuals or perennials that come to full bloom every summer.
- They were originally introduced in the 1800s. Chocolate cosmos were first introduced in Mexico in the 1850s and have since come to wider popularity. They’re perfect for hot, sunny gardens and will be a talking point for everyone who gets to see them.
- The smell is incredible! One of the best things about Chocolate cosmos isn’t the beautiful petals, it’s the smell! Many liken it to red velvet cake, while others describe it as more of a mix of vanilla and hot chocolate. Whatever it smells like to you, needless to say that it smells incredible, like being in a beautiful cozy bakery.
- Chocolate cosmos are great for the environment. Planting these in your garden will provide a great haven for bees, birds, butterflies, and other insects, which are incredibly important to the ecosystem. They’re also not toxic to animals, so even if you have pets, you can safely have these flowers in your garden without worrying about that!
- You’ll probably need to wait until next your to plant yours. It’s best to sow in March through May and plant your Chocolate cosmos in May and June. They bloom from June through September and should then be divided after the winter for the following year. Happy planting!
