A Seattle couple has decided to live on board a cruise ship permanently after discovering it’s less expensive than paying the mortgage on their house. Angelyn and Richard Burk quit their jobs and left everything that couldn’t fit in one suitcase behind as they embarked on their new life. They’re happier than ever!

  1. The couple took to the seas in May 2021. They soon realized that not only were they loving the travel experience, they were also saving cash. “We love to travel, and we were searching for a way to continuously travel in our retirement that made financial sense,” 53-year-old Angelyn Burk told 7News.
  2. How much money are they actually saving? According to their calculations, the couple can get by on as little as $89 a day, which is pretty sweet (via CNN). That includes food and shelter, plus entertainment, port fees, transportation, and taxes, proving just how good of a deal it really is.
  3. Angelyn and Richard Burk have gotten to travel all over the world. They’ve been on a 51-day trip from Seattle, Washington to Sydney, Australia, for one thing. That trip stopped in such places as Italy, Canada, the Bahamas, and Singapore. Given the many years they have ahead of them, they’ll likely get to see most corners of the world. Pretty exciting!
  4. This way of life is working out pretty well for them. “Our original plan was to stay in different countries for a month at a time and eventually retire to cruise ships as we got older,” Angelyn said. “We love to travel and we were searching for a way to continuously travel in our retirement that made financial sense.” And because they were frugal prior to taking to the seas, they never have to work again a day in their lives!
