That ’70s Show Star Danny Masterson Charged With Assault Of Three Women

Danny Masterson, star of the immensely popular sitcom That ’70s Show, has been charged with the rape of three different women in incidents that date back to 2001. The actor was arrested by LAPD officers at his home on the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday, June 17, and later released after posting $3.3 million bail.

  1. The alleged incidents happened between 2001 and 2003. According to the charges, Masterson is said to have raped a 23-year-old woman sometime between January and December 2001, a 28-year-old woman in April 2003, and a 23-year-old woman between October and December 2003. All of the assaults are said to have taken place at his home.
  2. Danny Masterson denies all charges. Instead, the 44-year-old claims that it’s his involvement with the Church of Scientology that has led him to be unfairly persecuted and singled out for crimes he didn’t commit, BBC News reports. While the charges initially surfaced back in 2017, both Masterson and his rep said that the case only picked up steam thanks to the producer of an anti-Scientology TV show.
  3. He insists he’s innocent. Back in 2017 when the LAPD confirmed they were investigating Masterson, he made a statement defending himself and his innocence. “From day one, I have denied the outrageous allegations against me. I have never been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one,” he said. “In this country, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, in the current climate, it seems as if you are presumed guilty the moment you are accused. I understand and look forward to clearing my name once and for all.”
  4. Four women filed a lawsuit against Danny Masterson in 2019. In the suit, they claimed that he had “systemically stalked, harassed, invaded their and their family’s privacy, and intentionally caused them emotional distress to silence and intimidate them” after they made rape accusations against him.
  5. The LAPD was investigating five separate rape claims against him. However, according to the Los Angeles Times, the District Attorney failed to file charges in two of those cases due to insufficient evidence and the expiration of the statute of limitations, respectively.
  6. Masterson’s attorney Tom Mesereau believes the star’s name will be cleared. “We’re confident that he will be exonerated when all the evidence finally comes to light and witnesses have the opportunity to testify,” he said in a statement on Wednesday, June 17. “Obviously, Mr. Masterson and his wife are in complete shock considering that these nearly 20-year old allegations are suddenly resulting in charges being filed, but they and their family are comforted knowing that ultimately the truth will come out. The people who know Mr. Masterson know his character and know the allegations to be false.” Sorry dude, whether it was a day ago or 20 years ago, you have to be held accountable for your behavior.
