Man Fined For Walking 280 Miles To ‘Cool Off’ After A Fight With His Wife

An Italian man was fined for breaking curfew after he walked 280 miles to “cool off” after a fight with his wife. The unnamed man, from Como, is said to have been handed a $525 fine for hiking 40 miles a day with no food and water, with police picking the 48-year-old up in the town of Fano on the Adriatic coast a week after he set off, Il Restro del Carlino reports.

  1. His wife reported him missing a week earlier. Police were reluctant to believe at first that the man had managed to walk half the length of the country, but when they verified with his wife that he’d been missing for a week, they realized it was true.
  2. He didn’t realize how far he was walking, apparently. The man told police that he just wanted to clear his head and appeared extremely fatigued, admitting that he had no idea how far he’d walked. “I got here by foot. I ate and drank because the people I met along the way offered me water and food. I’m fine,” he said of his experience.
  3. He was booked into a local hotel for the night. Incidentally, the hotel where the man stayed happen to be the same one he’d stayed in with his wife during a previous trip to Fano. That’s a bit strange!
  4. His wife came down to get him soon after. While I’m sure she was simply glad to see that he was alive and well, the couple was likely unimpressed with the €400 fine they were issued because the man had broken Italy’s 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew. Perhaps a quick stroll around the block will be better next time?
