A New Hampshire man has pleaded guilty in court after he was caught putting razor blades in pizza dough at a local supermarket. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, 39-year-old Nicholas Mitchell worked at a Maine-based company that made pizza dough, which is how he was allowed access to the product.
- The pizza dough made by Mitchell’s employer was sold in supermarkets around Maine and New Hampshire. The US Attorney’s Office revealed that Mitchell walked into a supermarket in the Maine town of Saco and “inserted razor blades in several of the pizza doughs and then returned the doughs to the display case.”
- Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt. The same day Mitchell placed the blades in the dough, three customers purchased it and discovered the blades inside when they got the product home. They immediately informed the supermarket and the dough was taken off the shelf. They found another blade in one of the other products removed from the shelf.
- Mitchell was arrested by the Dover Police Department. Authorities then discovered that he worked for the It’ll Be Pizza company, which makes dough for the Portland Pie Company. While he initially pleaded not guilty, video surveillance showed him putting the blades in the dough, the Portland Press Herald reports.
- Mitchell could face up to 10 years in prison. If convicted, he could receive a lengthy prison sentence, a fine of $250,000, and a supervised release of up to three years. He will also be forced to pay restitution to the victims. As per a statement from the US Attorney’s Office, “He will be sentenced following the preparation of a presentence report by the United States Probation Office. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.”
