Friends are the family you choose, and that’s why they’re such an important part of life. When I was 29, I made the difficult decision to move hundreds of miles from home all by myself in order to better my career and life. While drastic life decisions like that are often necessary, the repercussions of them aren’t easy sometimes. The most difficult thing for me about living so far from home is being away from my BFF, and there are some things I want her to know.

  1. I like my city, but it’s missing something. Obviously, that something is you. If you lived here too, this place would be 100% awesome. I run across things that make me think about you every day, and that’s why you get so many random texts and pictures. Please come visit me; I need you.
  2. I’m sorry I miss most birthdays and holidays, but I’m there in spirit. Travel is expensive and time off is hard to come by, but I’ll always come visit whenever I can. I feel bad about missing so many occasions, but I hope you know that my heart is always there even when I can’t be.
  3. I’m so glad we live in the era of smartphones. Even though several hundred miles lie between us, I’m grateful for my iPhone because I can still text you, send you funny pictures, hear your voice when I’m feeling down, and see you on Facetime when I’m missing your beautiful face.
  4. I think about moving back all the time just because I miss you so much. I did move here for a purpose, and it was worth it, but that purpose might not last forever. There’s always going to be a part of me that wants to move back so that we can hang out all the time the way we used to, and that part of me just might win one of these days.
  5. My new friends here are awesome, but they’re not you. No offense to my friends in my new city. I love you all, but my BFF is irreplaceable. Bestie, no one else gets me quite like you do or can make me smile as easily as you can, and that’s why I love you. I hope you feel the same way about me (actually I know you do).
  6. I like your new friends too, but I’m jealous of them. Obviously, you have great taste in friends because you chose me, but I’m always jealous when I know you’re having a girls’ day with your new friends. Even though they’re awesome, my heart says “But that’s my bestie! You can’t have her! And you better not hurt her!”
  7. Shopping just isn’t as much fun without you. On the bright side, that does help contain my spending, but I’ll need a new wardrobe at some point. Who else can I rely on to help me find the most flattering pieces at the lowest prices? So far, nobody.
  8. Thanks for not forgetting me. When I moved, my worst fear was that we would grow apart and not be best friends anymore. Nearly 3 years later, we’ve only become closer. It hasn’t been easy, but thank you so much for never giving up on me.
  9. You literally know everything about my life. You’re the only one I don’t keep any secrets from, because you’re the only one I trust so innately. You’ve never judged me or made me feel crappy about myself, and that’s so valuable. When it comes to you, I don’t need to hide anything.
  10. I don’t have a man, but I do have a soulmate and it’s you. Soulmates aren’t defined by gender. Even though my search for a suitable husband has been unfruitful/disastrous, I’m okay because I know I have you. When it comes down to it, that kind of bond is more valuable than any romantic relationship because every time a man hurts me or abandons me, I know you’ll still be there. Thank you for that, and I’ll love you forever.
