Anti-Abortion Texas Governor Claims People Have The ‘Right To Choose’ Whether Or Not To Get Covid Vaccine

Anyone pretending that Texas politics make any kind of logical sense or that the state’s laws are ever made in line with truly wanting the best for people needs their head examined. Case in point: this week, Governor Greg Abbott, whose state recently passed a law making seeking an abortion past the six-week mark not only illegal but financially lucrative, has claimed that people have the “right to choose” whether or not they want to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Yes, really.

  1. Texas’ abortion law isn’t just illegal, it’s downright dangerous. In addition to criminalizing any woman who seeks an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – that means a period that’s two weeks late, people! – can be arrested and sent to jail. Not only that, but if you know any woman who seeks an abortion after this time or even anyone who helps a woman try to end her pregnancy, you can turn them in and if they get prosecuted, you get $10,000. What kind of insanity is that?
  2. Greg Abbott supports the right to choose, just not for women’s bodies. In response to President Joe Biden’s new mandate requiring large employers to make sure their workers get vaccinated or get regular tests, Abbott took to Twitter to voice his displeasure and make perhaps the most clueless comment I’ve ever heard. It’s an “assault on private business,” Abbott said. He also insisted that Texas would actively work against the federal government to bypass Biden’s “power grab.”
  3. Getting a COVID vaccine is all about personal choice. Last I checked, a pregnant woman can’t get anyone else pregnant or ill by deciding to end a pregnancy, making that a TRULY personal choice. However, not getting vaccinated increases your chance of spreading illness, especially in crowded places, meaning it DOES affect other people. Guess which “choice” Abbott supports.
  4. Abbott issued his own anti-vaxx Executive Order. As he ironically stated on Twitter: “I issued an Executive Order protecting Texans’ right to choose whether they get the COVID vaccine & added it to the special session agenda.” Jesus. You really can’t make this stuff up.
