Wildlife officials from the Utah Department of Public Safety counting the bighorn sheep population were shocked to discover a “strange” metal monolith of unknown origin planted in the ground next to a rock cove in a remote part of the state, The Guardian reports. The structure, which stands between 10 and 12 feet high, was originally spotted via helicopter, which caught its shine in the midst of the red rocks.
- Even the helicopter pilot was stumped. Talking to local news channel KSLTV, pilot Bret Hutchings admitted he’d never seen anything like the monolith in his career. “That’s been about the strangest thing that I’ve come across out there in all my years of flying.”
- They had to turn around to get a better look. Once Hutchings and the biologists in the aircraft noticed the structure, they immediately turned back to get a better look at it. “One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it,” Hutchings recalled. “He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there – we’ve got to go look at it!'”
- The structure is clearly manmade. Hutchings insisted that despite speculation to the contrary, it’s very unlikely that the monolith was dropped from a UFO or anything as it’s clearly manmade and has been firmly planted in the ground. He suggested it might have been placed there by “a new wave artist or somebody that was a big fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey.”
- That’s great if it’s art, but what if it isn’t? It’s hard to imagine why anyone would plant a gigantic metal statue in the middle of the Utah wilderness. Is it art? Maybe, albeit strange art. But what else could it be and what purpose could it serve? The mind boggles!

Initiate the protocols and meet at the rendezvous point. It's begun.
