Woman Tells Judge She Can’t Do Jury Duty Because She Needs To See Her Sugar Daddy

A prospective juror in the sentencing trial for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz told the judge this week that she wouldn’t be able to serve because she has to see her sugar daddy every day. Her confession was somewhat confusing to Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who likely couldn’t believe that the woman was legitimately trying to use such a strange excuse to get out of jury duty.

  1. This is a serious criminal case. Nikolas Cruz pleaded guilty in October 2021 to 17 counts of first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for the school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. His death penalty trial was pushed back to give the defense time to interview more mental health experts. The jury being interviewed was to serve during the trial to decide whether or not Cruz would spend life in prison or be executed.
  2. The jury selection process will last two months. It began on Monday and consists of three separate steps to ensure the right jurors are selected given the seriousness of the decision. The woman in question clearly didn’t want to be part of it, so she had to come up with a creative excuse to try and get out of it.
  3. The potential juror has a lot going on. The trial is due to begin in July, which really won’t work for the woman. During the proceedings, Judge Scherer asked if anyone had any questions or concerns, which is when “Miss Bristol” spoke up. “This is a whole entire month. First of all, let me clarify myself, July 2 is my birthday, July 4 is my son, and the 18 is my other son.”
  4. Her kids birthdays didn’t seem like a legitimate enough reason to bow out. As Miss Bristol spoke, Judge Scherer stopped her. “Don’t talk too fast; we have to be able to understand … so you said that the July, there [are] dates in July that you’re not available? What are those dates?” Scherer asked. Bristol responded: “July 7, July 4, and July 18 … And again, I need to figure out something,” Bristol responds before dropping the bombshell that she has a “sugar daddy that I see every day.”
  5. Wait, what? Scherer was a bit confused by what she was hearing, so she asked for clarification. “I’m sorry?” Bristol doubled down on the claim. “My sugar daddy,” she said, with Scherer responding: “OK, I’m noto exactly sure what you’re talking about, but we’ll…” Bristol butted in: “I’m married, and I have my sugar daddy. I see him every day.” At the end, Judge Scherer told Bristol she would come back to her later.
  6. Miss Bristol got what she wanted. She was eventually dismissed from the trial altogether. Looks like she’ll have plenty of time with her sugar daddy!
