An employee who was accidentally paid nearly 300 times his salary did what many of us probably would: he resigned from his position and went on the run. The unnamed man, who worked at Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos in Chile, was paid around $180,000 instead of his usual $550 and instead of giving it back, he took it and disappeared.

  1. The man agreed to repay the money at first. His manager noticed it in May and it was flagged to HR. At that point, the employee said he’d go to the bank the following day to sort things out, but instead, he withdrew the cash and no one’s seen him since.
  2. His bosses at Consorcio have been trying to get in touch with him. They tried to contact him for the next three days, but local media outlet Diario Financiero reports they were unsuccessful.
  3. The man’s lawyer later contacted the company. They informed Consorcio that the man had resigned from his position with the company and would not be returning. Well, that was pretty obvious!
  4. Consorcio filed a complaint with the police. They accused the employee of misappropriation of funds. Given that the normal take-home pay in Chile is around $900, it’s pretty clear that the $150,000 will have been life-changing for the employee in question.
