In today’s edition of “new things to add to your list of mortal fears,” a Brazilian woman who was pronounced dead by doctors was discovered to be very much alive and breathing inside the body bag she’d been placed in hours after the fact. Norma Silveira da Silva, 90, was discovered by a crematorium worker who was very much about to turn her to ash before realizing she wasn’t deceased after all, per Brazilian news outlet Estadão.

Da Silva was pronounced dead just before midnight on November 25.

Doctors at Sao Jose Regional Hospital in Greater Florianopolis believed there were no signs of life and that the woman had sadly passed away. They were happy enough with this conclusion that they officially declared her dead and packed her into a body bag before sending her to the crematorium.

However, when the crematorium worker unzipped the body bag, he found that Norma Silveira da Silva’s skin was still warm and that she was struggling to breathe.

A thorough investigation is currently taking place.

Officials want to know how on earth something like this could have happened, though it’s clear they’re anxious to play down any criminal or intentional malpractice.

However, da Silva’s family doesn’t believe the investigation is going far enough. Her caregiver, Jessica Martins Silvi Pereira, said, “It’s a case of neglect that I would not wish on anyone.”

She added that the family is planning to sue the hospital for negligence over the traumatizing experience.

Da Silva’s family had no idea how she could have passed away so quickly.

Pereira added that she’d gone to see da Silva hours before she had supposedly died and while she was certainly unwell, she didn’t seem like she was about to die.

“On Saturday afternoon, I went to visit her and she opened her eye. She didn’t have much stimulation, but she managed to open her eye and saw that we were there,” she recalled.

However, soon after that, da Silva was declared dead, supposedly due to an infection, and she was sent to the crematorium before her family could see her again.

Da Silva was alive in the body bag for nearly two hours.

Per Pereira, da Silva was “breathing very weakly” when the crematorium worker discovered her.

“As she was no longer conscious, she couldn’t ask for help. She tried to breathe and couldn’t. I mean, from 11:40 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. she was inside the bag almost dying asphyxiated.”

What a horrible experience for da Silva and her loved ones.
