Are You A Trophy Girlfriend? 12 Signs He’s Using You For An Ego Boost

Sometimes, guys just need an ego boost and the same way that women go out and buy new clothes or dye our hair to make ourselves feel better. Dudes go out and get a trophy girlfriend to add to their personal self-image. He might be giving you all the gifts and attention you can ever want, but make no mistake—it’s all for his benefit.

  1. He only ever compliments your appearance. It’s nice to get complimented on your looks, but if it’s all he ever seems to talk about, he might be using you as an ego boost as opposed to actually liking you as a girlfriend. He might be especially handsy or end every conversation with, “You’re so beautiful. It’s true—you ARE beautiful. It just sucks that it’s the only reason he’s keeping you around.
  2. He suggests you meet his friends early on. He wants the world to know that he’s a badass boss who can get any girl he wants, AKA you. You’ll find it a little weird how eager he is to get you out with his friends. It all feels a little premature, and that’s because it is. Why is he in such a rush?
  3. He doesn’t ask you much about your life. All he thinks about when he looks at you is “hot girl alert.” He isn’t really concerned about your past or your personality because he’s not planning on making this relationship last. He’s just using you for a temporary boost in confidence. Some guys go out and buy a car when a life-crisis hits, others get a trophy girlfriend.
  4. He brings you to the most random events. You find yourself going to the most random places with him, like the laundromat or his intake appointment at the psychiatrist’s office. He just likes having you around because you make him feel like he’s The Man. Be careful—it’s not because he’s head over heels in love with you.
  5. He spends a lot of money on you. He wants to be the guy who can provide and he’s using you to show people how well-off he is and how he has the means to shower his super hot girlfriend with gifts. You might appreciate it in the moment, but just remember that he’s doing this to enhance the trophy girlfriend image and to keep you around for a little while longer, not because he actually loves you.
  6. He fell in love with you really fast. The second he found out that a girl like you would be willing to date a guy like him, it was all systems go. He did everything he could to keep you interested. He gave you presents, took you out wherever you wanted, came over whenever you called—he wasn’t shy AT ALL in showing you how much he likes you. In fact, it almost bordered on desperate. Well, guess what—he IS desperate and it’s so sad.
  7. He doesn’t really talk about the future. He doesn’t bring up any long-term plans for the two of you because he’s not really planning on taking this fling any further than however long it takes for him to get his groove back.
  8. He flirts with other girls—a lot. Now that he has the perfect girlfriend, he feels free to flirt with every girl who gives him a second glance. You swear he doesn’t seem like the ladies’ man type, but ever since he got with you, he’s been flirting up a storm. Why? It’s because you gave him the confidence to do it.
  9. He comments on your clothing choices. He wants to make sure you’re showing your best self when you’re out in public, so he’ll often give his opinion on your clothing, shoes, and hairstyle choices. You’ve never had a guy be so interested in what you were wearing before—and no, it’s not because he’s “into fashion,” it’s because he’s using you for your image.
  10. He doesn’t want to meet your friends and family. All he cares about is making sure his friends and family can see you. He has no interest whatsoever in meeting your folks because to him, this isn’t “that kind of relationship”.
  11. You don’t feel like you’re apart of his friend group. Even when you’re hanging out with his friends, he doesn’t really make an effort to get you in the loop of what’s going on. He’d just love it if you sat there next to him all nice looking and not get too involved with the inner workings of his friend group. He’s not intending to make you an important part of his life, so why would he try to include you?
  12. He constantly tries to dominate over you. You get controlling vibes from him every once in a while. You sometimes feel like you’re the one living in HIS world and it’s never the other way around. It’s something you’ve gotten used to ignoring, but be warned—this is a huge sign that you’re his trophy girlfriend.
