A man imprisoned for stabbing his girlfriend to death has been released after gaining a large amount of weight behind bars. Dimitri Fricano, now 35, was arrested in 2017 after stabbing Erika Preti 57 times while the pair vacationed in Sardinia because she was angry that he’d left “too many crumbs” on the hotel bed. While he was sentenced to 30 years behind bars in 2022, a judge doesn’t believe the now-430-lb murderer would be able to lose weight behind bars, The Messenger reports.

Dimitri Fricano hasn’t spent much time in prison.

Even though he was arrested immediately after the murder, most of the time since then he’s enjoyed as a free man. The trial was repeatedly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning the trial didn’t actually happen until 2022.

At that point, Fricano was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison. However, he won’t actually serve that sentence, per Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera.

He’ll get to live with his parents instead of in a cell.

Judges decided in November 2023 that Dimitri Fricano could serve the entirety of his sentence at his parents’ house in his hometown of Biella. Given that murder is the most serious crime you can commit, there has to be a good reason for it, right? Eh…

When Fricano was arrested, the Daily Mail reports that he weighed around 250 pounds. However, he has since ballooned to more than 430 pounds and is said to need a wheelchair or crutches to get around.

Since the prison isn’t equipped to deal with someone with complex needs in this way, judges ruled that Fricano is “incompatible with the prison regime” and that he’d never lose weight behind bars.

Erika Preti’s family is understandably furious.

Her father, Fabrizio Preti, told Corriere della Sera that judges made a “shameful decision” in allowing the murderer to essentially go free.

“No one will give me back my little girl. But for us, the pain is still too strong for him to be released too soon,” he said.

While authorities claim that Dimitri Fricano would go back to prison if he lost weight, Fabrizio Preti doesn’t believe that will ever happen.
