While many people claim that Five Guys is overpriced and not worth the money, I (and many others) would humbly disagree. Their burgers are super tasty and actually made with real beef rather than reconstituted leftovers. They also have really delicious milkshakes and fries, the latter of which seem to be never-ending even if you only order a small. As it turns out, Five Guys founder Jerry Murrell says there’s a reason for that.
Five Guys fries aren’t just tasty, they may actually be healthier.
Talking to Republic, Murrell revealed that there’s something special that sets Five Guys fries apart from its competitors: they’re fried in peanut oil.
“Peanut oil is a healthier oil. Lots of people prefer to use hydrogenated oils for a crisper fry, but we want that melt-in-your-mouth buttery taste that non-hydrogenated oil offers,” he explained.
“There are no trans fats or preservatives, and it’s the purest oil available. Since fries are all we cook in it, nothing touches our oil except for potatoes and our fry baskets.”
The company also uses dehydrated frozen fries which means they don’t absorb as much oil when cooking.
So, why does Five Guys give you so many fries?
A regular-sized fries at the joint comes in a 24 oz. cup, which is already more than other fast food places offer.
But if that wasn’t enough, Five Guys workers will throw in an extra scoop of fries for good measure — it’s just company policy.
Murrell told Republic that he wanted customers to be given so many fries that they actually think it was a mistake.
“I won’t name names, but other restaurants just don’t give a satisfying amount of fries. We always give an extra scoop,” he said. “I say load ’em up and make sure they get their money’s worth.”
“[Some] people complain that they get too many fries. I just tell them to make hash browns with the leftovers. I teach my managers that if people aren’t complaining, then you’re not giving them enough.”
