A 17-year-old Ohio girl is being tried as an adult for brutally murdering her 33-year-old boyfriend’s mother after giving him 5 hours to do it himself. Kaitlyn Coones of Canton is charged with aggravated murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse over the death of 53-year-old Nicole Jones, People reports.

Kaitlyn Coones had been living in a foster home when she went missing.

She was last seen on April 11, 2023, but soon disappeared and moved in with boyfriend Jonathan Jones. The man had only just been charged a month prior over his relationship with her, which began when she was only 15 and he was 31, per The Sentinel-Tribune.

Once Coones moved in, she instructed Jonathan Jones to kill his mother because she thought the woman didn’t like her and was getting in the way of their relationship, according to a News 19 report.

Kaitlyn had told Jonathan that they needed to do something about his mother because she was preventing them from being together and she gave him five hours to do something about her, and at one point in the interview, she even mentioned killing her,” Sylvania Township Police Department Detective Jake Albright said,

Jonathan Jones couldn’t bring himself to kill his mother.

After giving him five hours to commit the heinous act, Kaitlyn Coones decided to take matters into her own hands. Lucas County Prosecutor said Coones “went outside and retrieved a rock.” She used that rock to end Nicole Jones’ life.

“When Nicole Jones was standing in front of the refrigerator in the kitchen, unaware of Kaitlyn’s presence, she bludgeoned Nicole Jones a number of times and strangled her,” Lastra said.

Jonathan Jones is said to have been sitting calmly in the living room as Coones killed his mother.

The pair worked together to dispose of the body.

They threw her body into a dumpster at an apartment complex, and the dumpster was later taken to a local landfill. Following the crime, Kaitlyn Coones and Jonathan Jones flew to Mexico.

While there, Coones allegedly confessed her crime to a case worker, assistant prosecuting attorney Nicole Patty Wardrop said, per ABC 13.

“While she’s on the road, she calls a case worker to inform that she has done something terrible,” Wardrop said, adding that authorities immediately went to the home and launched an investigation.

“What they find matches almost exactly what she has explained as the crime as it occurred.”

The pair were arrested shortly after.

While in Mexico, Jonathan Jones didn’t disarm the GPS tracking device on his person following his conviction in March 2023, which is how he was caught. Coones was with him and also taken into custody by the US Marshals Service on May 8.

Jonathan is also facing charges in connection with Nicole Jones’ murder, though which charges are unclear.
