Sleazy Landlord Asked Tenant For Sex Instead Of Rent After She Lost Her Job And Couldn’t Pay

A single mom who fell behind on rent after losing her job because of the coronavirus pandemic was horrified when her landlord suggested she spend the night with him to make up for her missed payment. Gail Savage texted the landlord to let him know her April payment would be late as she awaited her government stimulus check, but his response wasn’t the understanding one she hoped for. Instead, he blatantly propositioned her for sex, Buzzfeed News reports.

  1. Gail thought her landlord was texting the wrong person at first. Given how inappropriate the man’s response to her text was, she initially thought he must have meant to send the message to someone else. She repeatedly clarified with him, but he didn’t back down.
  2. She knew immediately that she had to move out. “The second I figured out it was happening, it was the craziest thing: I put Salem in his car seat and walked out the door,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘I don’t know where I’m going, but I can’t stay’. I was scared.”
  3. Sadly, she didn’t have the money to move right away. Because of her financial circumstance, Gail had no choice but to return back to the home for another month until she was able to move out and to safer accommodation. “How am I supposed to move out, with no money? That’s why he chose me to do this to,” she said.
  4. She now has a much nicer place to live. Gail and her son are now living in a lovely two-bedroom house with a garden thanks to the help of a friend who works in real estate. Not only that, but the house’s initial rent price, which was $300 more than her previous place, was lowered to match it thanks to Fair Housing.
  5. The landlord claims it was all “a joke” and “a misunderstanding.” Understandably, Gail is pursuing legal action against the landlord, who claims she got it all wrong and he wasn’t being serious. He says he was texting his ex-wife at the time and thought he was sending the messages to her, not Gail. “Something got confused. That’s all,” he said.
  6. Gail isn’t giving up – she’s determined to get justice. “He picked the wrong person because I’m equipped for this,” she said. “I’m not going to allow him to do this to me or anyone else.”
