Barbie and Ken are one of the most legendary pairings in pop culture history, but if you’re expecting to see them lock lips on the big screen, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Margot Robbie certainly was, as she was hoping to share a kiss with Ryan Gosling in the new “Barbie” movie and it just didn’t happen.
In an interview with People, Robbie said that not getting to smooth Gosling in the movie “didn’t feel like a win to me.” However, it was her friends who were even more disappointed by the news, as they clearly wanted to live vicariously.
“All of my girlfriends were like, ‘Well you did a whole movie with him and you don’t kiss? What’s wrong with you? I thought you were kind of in charge on this one!’” she said. “I was like, ‘I know, I can’t check that one off [my list].’”
Ryan Gosling didn’t share Margot Robbie’s feelings, however, and thought a kiss would have cheapened the Barbie and Ken relationship. Instead, he liked how awkward the characters were, saying, “It was so funny trying to figure out what their idea of kissing might be.”
Obviously, Robbie was likely (hopefully?) being flippant here, as “Barbie” isn’t really about romance at all. Greta Gerwig always takes a more interesting and less obvious route when delving into stories with defined parameters like this, and the movie is more of an exploration on the female experience in a modern world. A make-out scene between the two leads is unnecessary and would have been pretty reductive.
Then again, Margot Robbie is known for her love of kissing. At least this time around, she didn’t take it upon herself to plant one on Ryan Gosling the way she did with Brad Pitt when they were filming “Babylon,” right?
