Pods Installed In German City Give Homeless People A Warm Place To Sleep On Cold Winter Nights

A German city has installed intelligent sleeping pods to give homeless people in the area a warm, dry place to sleep on cold winter nights. The pods, which have been placed in various locations in the city of Ulm, could save countless lives this winter, as well as providing refuge to some of the city’s most vulnerable population. The only question is, why haven’t other cities followed suit?

  1. These pods are perfect for inclement weather. The pods, dubbed the Ulmer Nest, are made of wood and steel, making them both waterproof and insulated against the elements. Not only that, but they were recently upgraded to include solar panels and a wireless communication system. The design allows fresh air to circulate regularly as well, so it never gets too claustrophobic inside. So simple but so incredible!
  2. A local charity is alerted anytime someone checks in. As EuroWeekly News reports, the independent web connection in the pods means that whenever someone is utilizing one of them, a local charity is alerted so that the pod can be checked and cleaned regularly. They also reach out to the person who used the pod whenever possible to offer resources and help, if needed.
  3. Each Ulmer Nest can sleep up to two people. That means those who are on the streets together can seek shelter together as well. There are locks on the pods for privacy purposes and the company behind the pods is planning further energy-saving methods in the near future. Incredible!
  4. This is a much-needed service and one that so many homeless people will appreciate and benefit from. “With the Ulm Nests, we hope to offer a little bit of security, protection, and security to those who most depend on it in Ulm,” a statement on the Ulmer Nest Facebook page read. No doubt that in addition to saving many lives, they’ll also make the streets just a little less unbearable for those who are struggling.
