Should You “Marinate” Your Diet Coke? A New TikTok Trend Says Yes

I’m something of a Diet Coke purist. I don’t like any other soda, I’ll outright refuse to drink the far inferior Coke Zero, and it’s kinda torturous when a restaurant only has Diet Pepsi. That being said, all I need to be happy is a cold can (or, even better, a fountain Diet Coke from the likes of 7-11). Apparently I’m missing something, though, because according to TikTok, I should let my Diet Coke “marinate” in the fridge for days before drinking.

Wait, how do you “marinate” Diet Coke?

According to Kristen, who goes by @hauskris, drinking Diet Coke isn’t just a hobby, it’s an art. In a clip posted to her account, she revealed that she has a special way of enjoying her mid-day Diet Coke break, and it’s made all the better if the drink has been allowed to “marinate” in the fridge for several days.

“Marinate” in this case literally just means popping the cans in the fridge and leaving them for several days — the longer, the better.

“I have been marinating my Diet Coke in my fridge for 10 days,” she revealed in the video.

What’s the point of it?

As she pours the cold Diet Coke into a glass filled with ice, Kristen revealed that allowing the drink to “marinate” in the fridge for as long as possible will make the soda even “crispier” when it’s time to drink it.

“I believe that the best Diet Cokes are the ones that come in a can and that have been marinating for over — and at least — three days,” she claims.

“Over a week is phenomenal and two weeks-plus, we’re talking a really crispy Coke.”

She added that pebble-shaped ice is the best for drinking your Diet Coke with, and she also adds a slice of lime for good measure.

“Do you hear that fizz?” she asks as she holds up the glass. “That is the sound of beauty. The sound of a perfect Diet Coke!”

One thing Kristen does with her Diet Coke really disturbs me.

Whether or not letting your Diet Coke “marinate” makes any difference whatsoever is up for debate. However, I feel like we can all agree on one major faux pas Kristen makes: pouring a packet of flavored sweetener into her glass with her Diet Coke.

First of all, the reason anyone drinks Diet Coke over Coke Zero — at least the reason I do — is because they prefer the somewhat harsh bitterness it provides rather than the sweetness of Coke Zero, Diet Coke with lime, and other variations the brand has offered. Adding an additional flavor to it kinda negates the point to me.

Some commenters insist her tip is legit.

As one person wrote, “I’m sure someone has explained the science already, but colder liquids carbonate more quickly and thoroughly. So, this is legit to an extent.”

Someone else had another suggestion for if you’re in a hurry, saying, “Do you ever pop a Diet Coke in a freezer to speed up the marination? I love a Diet Coke that’s been in the freezer for 30-ish minutes?”

Even the official Coca-Cola TikTok account weighed in, commenting, “Nothing like the first sip of a marinated Diet Coke.”

Ugh, I’m going to have to try this now, aren’t I?
