A Michigan woman was arrested after she had the gall to shoplift at a Walmart during the store’s Shop with a Cop event, MLive reports. The Walmart store in Genoa Township was attended by 75 police officers for the event, but that didn’t stop a 62-year-old woman from trying to grab a five-finger discount.

The event was meant to help children in need.

The Walmart’s Shop with a Cop event was set up to allow local kids to team up with an officer to shop their their family and nab themselves a present for the holidays, thanks to generous donations from local businesses.

“The Shop with a Cop event benefits children who might not receive presents for Christmas or who may need positive reinforcement with police officers,” officials said. “Each child is paired with a local police officer and paraded to Walmart with lights and sirens. At Walmart, they are given money to spend on anything on their Christmas wish list and have their picture taken with Santa.”

However, one woman thought it provided excellent cover for a shoplifting adventure. Sadly for her, the officers weren’t as distracted as she clearly hoped they might be.

The woman tried to steal quite a bit of merch.

She didn’t just grab a sweater or a watch and be on her way. Instead, police say she loaded up her cart with more than $727 worth of Walmart merchandise and tried to walk straight out of the store.

However, she was noticed by a staff member, who went straight to one of the police officers. The theft was stopped in progress when the woman was trying to load her items into her car.

“Ironically, the suspect had parked her vehicle next to all the patrol vehicles of the police officers participating in the event,” Michigan state police said in a statement.

The thief was immediately placed under arrest.

She was booked into Livingston County Jail, though official charges against her have not been made public, nor has her identity.

It’s also unclear whether or not she’s still behind bars or whether she was released via bail or bond, or on her own recognizance.
