16 Weird Things People Do To Look Cool That Always Backfire

Being cool is similar to being classy: you don’t have to work hard to make people believe that you possess it — they’ll see it right away. The problem comes in when people try way too hard to look cool. They end up doing things that actually have the opposite effect and make them look foolish instead. Here are some of the worst offenses.

1. Smoking cigarettes

The days of cigarettes looking “cool” have been smoked out. Nowadays, someone who lights up a cig just comes across as annoying because they’re blowing smoke in everyone’s faces or throwing a tantrum when they can’t smoke in a restaurant.

2. Using too many curse words

Throwing curse words around isn’t cool, ever. It’s done by someone trying way too hard to be seen as rough or having an edge. What’s interesting is that it’s actually making them seem unintelligent.

3. Bragging about being overworked

Unless someone is venting about a legit work schedule that’s bringing them down, it’s so boring to hear them go on and on about how much they’re working and losing sleep. It’s like they’re doing this for attention or to seem special. Working yourself into the ground isn’t a badge of honor!

4. Waiting hours before replying to a message

Not being glued to one’s phone is cool. It means people can connect with others in real life instead of phubbing them. What’s not cool is if they’re pretending not to be around their phone, like by not replying to important messages right away so they seem like they don’t care. Meanwhile, it’s so weird when you can see that they’re online. Busted!

5. Posting selfies every few hours

Nothing wrong with a good selfie that boosts one’s mood and self-confidence. What’s not cool is when people post a ton of selfies multiple times a day and that’s all you see on your newsfeed. Now they’re just irritating!

6. Playing music too loud in public

It’s annoying when people play music too loud in public, whether it’s blasting on their phone or in their car. Not everyone wants to hear their favorite tunes! This gets them attention, sure, but it’s for all the wrong reasons.

7. Name-dropping

People who love to throw in the names of a celebrity they know or their friend knows might do this to seem like they’re influential and rubbing shoulders with people who are noteworthy. In reality, it just makes them seem desperate for attention.

8. Bragging about never reading a book

This one’s surprisingly common. People might love to talk about how the last book they read was something like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when they were a kid. Seriously? This doesn’t make them seem like a cool rebel. Instead, it makes it clear why their social media posts have such poor spelling and grammar.

9. Talking about how many people they’ve slept with

No one needs to know that someone’s slept with more than a hundred people. And yet, there are some people who go around talking about their number like it’s something that boosts their value. They might think telling it to someone they’ve just met makes them more attractive. No one cares!

10. Judging others to get some laughs

Some people might think it’s cool to mock or judge others in a “joking” way because it might get some laughs from those around them. But, behind the scenes, they’re just giving themselves a bad name and a reputation for being cruel.

11. Agreeing with everything people say, even if they don’t mean it

Being cool is usually linked to getting approval from others. So, people who want to be cool might go along with the flow and agree with what other people say so they can be accepted and seem like they’re one of the cool people. But, it just makes them come across as fake.

12. Revving their cars

Unless someone is doing work on their car, they don’t have to rev it. When they do this, they’re trying to show off or be seen in public. What’s weird is that the people who usually do this don’t even have fancy cars that are worthy of gawking over.

13. Getting blackout drunk

Although drinking can be fun, if someone’s drinking so much that they’re always blacking out and can’t remember what went down at parties, they’re not going to be talked about because they’re cool but because they’re irresponsible or a drain on others who have to ensure they get home safely.

14. Refusing to like anything popular

Sometimes, people who try too hard to be cool will follow the mantra that anything popular is wrong or boring. While this can sometimes be true, it’s all about personal preference. They’re just trying to take the anti-popular highway so they seem interesting and can look down on others.

15. Talking about their tattoos

Everyone knows that tattoos can be sexy. What’s unsexy, though, is when someone has to bore everyone in the room with their tattoo origin stories, even though – and here’s the kicker – no one asked them about their ink.

16. Using shock statements to get attention

People who try to be cool might try to get attention or stand out in a room full of people by making controversial or shocking statements they don’t even believe. It makes them seem annoying or like they’re trying way too hard, which is never cool.
